What do you know about the war in Afghanistan? -Why are we there? -When did the conflict start? -Who is fighting there? -How many British soldiers have lost their lives during the fighting? -How many civilians have died during the fighting? Do you think people in Britain should know the answers to these questions? Does it matter?

4. To help you find out a bit more about the conflict have a go at the multiple choice questions on the 1 st side of the sheet. Facts & figures about the war in Afghanistan: -In 2010 over 2000 civilians were killed. -Over 8000 civilians have been killed in the last 4 years. -There are more US troops in Afghanistan than in Iraq. -The estimated cost of the war in the next 10 years is $2.4 trillion. -Over 2,300 soldiers have died fighting the Taliban & Al Qaeda since the conflict started. -To date 364 British soldiers have died. Is all of this worth it to capture 1 man & to stop the area being a place where terrorists of the future can train?

8. After it emerged that Osama Bin Laden was responsible for 9/11 the US tracked him down to Afghanistan. BUT… Problem 1 – Afghanistan was run by the Taliban who supported Al Qaeda and allowed them to run their training camps there. The Taliban did NOT support a US invasion. Problem 2 – The United Nations agreed that the Taliban were a negative influence in the area but they only support military action if it is in ‘self-defence’ in response to an ‘armed attack’. The UN did NOT give the US permission for large scale military action in Afghanistan. This left the US with 2 choices: 1.Leave Al Qaeda alone in Afghanistan. 2.Invade Afghanistan & end up causing the deaths of thousands.

9. Now you have found a bit more of the background to the war in Afghanistan it is time to consolidate what you have learnt. Task 1 On the 2nd side of the workshop sheet you have some arguments about the war in Afghanistan. Write next to each box if it is an argument FOR or AGAINST the war. Task 2 Using these arguments fill 1 part of your main task sheet (which you were given in P1). Make sure you use the arguments for and against which you have found in task 1.
