2 doc.: IEEE 802.11-16/0452r0 Submission Mar 2016 This document contains a recommendation on how to respond to a liaison related to ISO/IEC 11801-06 ISO/IEC JTC1/SC25/WG3 (Customer Premises Cabling) sent Adrian Stephens (IEEE 802.11 WG Chair) a liaison(11-16-0370) on 10 March 2016 related to the next edition ISO/IEC 11801-6 This proposed standard contains recommendations on dimensions between access points based on the technology being supported, and the liaison requested suggestions for improvements At the opening IEEE 802.11 WG plenary on 14 March 2016, the WG Chair volunteered Andrew Myles and Peter Ecclesine (Cisco) to provide a recommendation to the WG on what should be done to respond to the liaison This document contains their recommendation … … noting that neither are volunteering to execute the recommendation Myles & Ecclesine, CiscoSlide 2

3 doc.: IEEE 802.11-16/0452r0 Submission Mar 2016 IEEE 802.11 WG should develop a detailed response to the material in the next edition of ISO/IEC 11801-06 A brief review of the proposed next edition of ISO/IEC 11801-6 indicates a wide variety of issues that could be fixed –See next three pages for details IEEE 802.11 WG could certainly do nothing on the basis that the recommendations in ISO/IEC 11801-6 are very general in nature and any issues are unlikely to have a significant impact However, it is probably in the interest of the Wi-Fi industry to ensure that any recommendations relating to IEEE 802.11 are up to date, accurate and represent best practice On this basis, it is recommended that a small ad hoc develop some modifications to ISO/IEC 11801-6 for liaising to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC25/WG3 –Note: the recommendation is made on the basis that a reply is required sometime before the next WG3 meeting in September 2016, giving plenty of time for the ad hoc to complete its work Myles & Ecclesine, CiscoSlide 3

4 doc.: IEEE 802.11-16/0452r0 Submission Mar 2016 A brief review of the proposed next edition of ISO/IEC 11801-6 indicates a variety of issues First pass comments on draft of ISO/IEC 11801-6 The draft refers to 802.11a, 802.11b, etc and yet these amendments no longer exist as standalone documents; the draft should be modified with more accurate references The draft suggests 802.11 includes an infrared interface, but infrared was deprecated some years ago and was never/rarely implemented; the draft should be modified to remove any reference to infrared The draft suggests that 802.11n operates at 600Mb/s and 802.11ac operates at 7Gb/s, but this is only possible in ideal circumstances; the draft should be modified to say “up to” The draft does not mention 60GHz networks, which are likely to be deployed more widely from late 2016. 5 doc.: IEEE 802.11-16/0452r0 Submission Mar 2016 A brief review of the proposed next edition of ISO/IEC 11801-6 indicates a variety of issues First pass comments on draft of ISO/IEC 11801-6 The draft defines typical indoor ranges for each technology. While these ranges are probably accurate for the highest rates for each technology they do not represent ranges at lower rates. Such ranges are not a good way to determine appropriate AP spacing in all circumstances The draft suggests ~24m spacing for APs. However, current best practice in the industry for dense enterprise deployments is ~18m. The draft should be modified to represent best practice Of course, not all environments require a dense, high throughput deployment. The draft should be modified to note that AP location is also a function of the use case requirements While the draft highlights the benefits of a site survey, its recommendations are based on a typical range of 12m. The draft should make it clear that range is a function of local building properties Myles & Ecclesine, CiscoSlide 5

6 doc.: IEEE 802.11-16/0452r0 Submission Mar 2016 A brief review of the proposed next edition of ISO/IEC 11801-6 indicates a variety of issues First pass comments on draft of ISO/IEC 11801-6 The draft states APs should be centrally located in their associated coverage areas, but this is not always possible. The draft should note that directional antennas can be used when this is impossible or difficult The draft suggests that multiple cables are needed to support multiple interfaces (eg 2.4GHz and 5GHz); typically this is not the case. The draft should be modified to correct or clarify this statement The draft suggests using hexagons, squares or rectangle to model coverage. Unfortunately, radio rarely follows these shapes. The draft should be modified to make it clear that such shapes are purely a modelling mechanism (and that rectangles are unlikely ever to be useful) Myles & Ecclesine, CiscoSlide 6
