In Shakespeare ' s time, males played all the characters Because most of the Globe and all of its stage was open air, acoustics were poor and the actors shouted their lines, stressed their enunciation, and engaged in exaggerated theatrical gestures

Tragically, the original Globe burned down in 1613 due to a cannon shot during a performance of Henry VIII In 1644 Puritans who opposed theatre performances closed the second Globe

Shakespeare ' s Globe Theatre was the inspiration of the actor and director Sam Wanamaker Shakespeare ' s Globe Theatre officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on June 12, 1997 with a production of « Henry V »

The exterior of the theatre is a Tudor style building, with a thatched roof covering the galleries and stage, but leaving the central area
