Monday, October 12, 2009 Objectives: Students will analyze the explanations of psychological disorders in order to compare and contrast the different psychological perspectives. Opener: Which of the disorders seems the most likely to be caused by “nature”? Which seems the most likely to be caused by “nurture”? Activities: 1)Complete Opener. Copy Homework. 2)Complete the explanations portion of the chart on psychological disorders. Homework: Look at the explanations for the disorder your “character” from Friday night’s homework has. What are the different ways that disorder can be explained? Choose one explanation and discuss how a psychologist who believes in that explanation might “treat” your character.

Anxiety Disorders Psychoanalytic Approach: cauesd by repressed/forbidden childhood urges Learning Approach: result of a traumatic event Cognitive Approach: people begin to believe that they are helpless, can’t control situations

Anxiety Disorders Biological Approach: genetics plays a role – twin studies shows that identical twins raised separately are much more likely to have the same disorder. ALSO, fearing things might have helped survive – makes sense from an evolutionary perspective

Anxiety Disorders Synthesis: people with the disorders might have a biological tendency to overeact to sensation

Mood Disorders Psychoanalytic Approach: result of internalized anger due to real or imagined loss Learning Approach: learned helplessness Cognitive Approach: habitual style of explaining life events – everything is out of your control

Mood Disorders Biological Approach: serotonin and noradrenaline deficiencies Synthesis: your learned behavior may be causing your serotonin/noradrenaline levels to drop and/or the deficiencies may be causing you to be more predisposed to depressive behaviors

Schizophrenia Disorganized: incoherent in thought or speech, disorganized in behavior, delusions and hallucinations – but all disorganized and unconnected, inappropriate emotions, no personal hygiene Paranoid: delusions around a single theme, agitated, confused, afraid Catatonic: hold unusual body positions, erratic slowing/quickening of motion, very flexible

Schizophrenia Psychoanalytic Approach: the id overwhelms the ego – leads to getting stuck in the oral stage and you develop hallucinations, disconnect from reality Learning Approach: harsh family environment contributes, but doesn’t cause

Schizophrenia Biological: relatives have a higher risk, the close the relationship the more the risk, higher risk if trauma at birth or exposure to virus Synthesis: combination of genetic factors, complications during pregnancy and birth, stress, viral infections, quality of parenting

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 Objectives: Students will analyze psychological disorders by evaluating causes. Openers: Which approach to explaining psychological disorders do you find the most convincing? Why? Activities: 1)Complete Opener. 2)Copy Homework. 3)Complete Psychological Disorders dialogues. Homework: Dialogues due on Monday.
