L4 Epidemics Learning Objectives: 1.Recall common diseases that are caused by microbes and what type of microbes causes them. 2.Describe what an epidemic is. 3.Explain how to treat disease.

Practical: Yeast Yeast are a type of fungi and a microorganism. All microorganisms respire to release energy. Glucose + Oxygen  Carbon Dioxide + Water Purpose: We are going to investigate how temperature affects the respiration of yeast.

Analysing Results Draw a graph of your results. 1.What was the independent variable (we changed)? 2.What was the dependent variable (we measured)? 3.What were some control variables (we kept the same)? 4.What conclusions can draw from the results of the experiment? 5.From the results of the experiment, can you think of one way to prevent the spread of infectious disease?

Infectious Diseases Infectious DiseaseMicrobe ColdCold Viruses Influenza (Flu)Influenza Virus Chicken PoxChicken Pox Virus Food PoisoningSalmonella Bacterium E. Coli Bacterium Tuberculosis (TB)Tuberculosis bacterium CholeraCholera bacterium AIDSHIV virus Athlete’s FootA few types of fungi

Epidemics Epidemic = a widespread occurrence (outbreak) of an infectious disease What could cause an epidemic? How could you stop an epidemic?

Read the story of the Cholera outbreak
