Instructional Shifts and Unpacking the Standards “HOW” do we teach and learn? “WHAT” we teach and learn? English Language Arts and Mathematics Instructional Shifts Unpacking the PA Common Core Standards

Goals and Objectives of this Workshop Participants will:  Become more familiar with the PA Common Core Standards.  Practice unpacking PA Common Core Standards.  Analyze unpacking outcomes both horizontally and vertically.

Why “unpack” standards?  Clear expectations  Targets of performance  Focus on evidence of learning  Assessments that measure the standards  Instructional alignment with the standards  Reflection of hands-on and minds-on instruction

A Triple Track Mindset Track 1: Personal Growth- How am I going to deepen my own learning? Track 2: Collaboration- How can I work with my colleagues to grow? Track 3: Application- What are the implications for my work with students?

Unpacking Standards Ainsworth, L. (2003). Unwrapping the standards: A simple process to make standards manageable. Englewood, CO: Lead + Learn Press. 8 “Unwrapped standards provide clarity as to what students must know and be able to do. When teachers take the time to analyze each standard and identify its essential concepts and skills, the result is more effective instructional planning, assessment and student learning.”

Unpacking Model Identify the “Big Picture Take Away” for Mathematics: Geometry GeometryIdentify, compare, and classify shapes and their attributes. What students need to know- content (nouns) What students need to be able to do- skills (verbs) Enduring Understanding and Essential Question Practices/Strategies for Teaching Options for Assessment Shapes Attributes Identify Compare Classify How can 2-D and 3-D shapes be described? How can the identification and classification of shapes help us understand them? How are geometric properties used to solve problems in everyday life? 10 Unpacking Reflection  Summarize your unwrapped standards. What surprised you?  What curriculum, instruction, and assessment pieces do we have in place that support the implementation of these new state standards?  In which areas do we need to make curriculum, instruction, and assessment upgrades?  What existing tools and resources do you have that can continue to be used in implementing the new standards?  What new tools and resources will be needed?  What do you anticipate will be the greatest challenge in implementing the Common Core State Standards for ELA and Math?  What do you anticipate will be the greatest benefit?
