1 Understanding and reading Nutrition Labels Standard: Create strategies to consume a variety of nutrient- dense foods and beverages and to consume less calorie dense and empty calorie foods.

2 What’s in the bag? Travel to each food station with your partner. WITHOUT looking in the bag guess what the food item is in the bag by reading the ingredients. Record this on your worksheet.

3 What’s in the bag? Do you read the ingredient list when purchasing a food? Why is it important to read what ingredients are in the food we consume? What ingredient would indicate that a food has trans fats? What ingredients would indicate that a food product has added sugar? What are other ingredients we should try to avoid when purchasing a food product?

4 FDA requires the following information to be provided on all food packaging: Name of food Net amount of weight Name and address of the manufacturer Nutrition Content Ingredients (1 st ingredient holds the most weight)

8 Calories Calories provide a measure of how much energy you get from a serving of this food. General Guide to Calories 40 Calories is low 100 Calories is moderate 400 Calories or more is high

9 Nutrients: How Much? Americans generally get enough of these nutrients. Try and limit these: Get Enough of these nutrients each day:

11 % of Daily Value Based on a 2,000 kcal diet There is no % of Daily Value for Saturated Fat, Trans Fat and Cholesterol. These are all linked to raising blood cholesterol levels increasing your risk for coronary heart disease. Health experts recommend that you keep your intake of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol as low as possible as part of a nutritionally balanced diet.

12 Reading Food Labels Work with a partner to analyze the food labels assigned to you. Complete the worksheet together. Be ready to share your findings with the class.

13 Individual Classwork In your Health notebook, write a paragraph about whether or not you think the nutrition facts label should be modified to the newer version. Do you believe that this would help consumers better understand the label? Why or why not?
