Qualitative and Quantitative Practical Success Criteria for Qualitative Practical

Students need to be able to:  Set up apparatus correctly  Follow instructions given in the form of written instructions or diagrams  Use their apparatus to collect an appropriate quantity of data or observations, including subtle differences in colour, solubility or quantity of materials

Ion Testing:  Be able to follow a sequence of precipitation reactions to a valid conclusion  Be able to use the Qualitative Analysis notes to create a valid conclusion

Ion Testing:  It will be assumed that candidates will be familiar with:  The reactions of the following cations: NH 4 +, Mg 2+, Al 3+, Ca 2+, Cr 3+, Mn 2+, Fe 2+, Fe 3+, Cu 2+, Zn 2+, Ba 2+, Pb 2+  The reactions of the following anions: CO 3 2-, NO 3 -, NO 2 -, SO 4 2-, SO 3 2-, Cl -, Br -, I -, CrO 4 2-

Ion Testing:  It will be assumed that candidates will be familiar with:  Tests for the following gases: NH 3, CO 2, Cl 2, H 2, O 2, and SO 2, as detailed in the qualitative analysis notes which will be included with the question paper and are reproduced at the end of the section.  The substances to be investigated may contain ions not included in the above list: in such cases, candidates will not be expected to identify the ions but only to draw conclusions of a general nature.

Qualitative and Quantitative Practical Success Criteria for Quantative Practical

Students need to be able to:  Make measurements using pipettes, burettes, measuring cylinders, thermometers, and other common laboratory apparatus.

Titration:  Be able to dilute a solution, by pipette or burette into a volumetric flask and calculate a new volume by dilution factor.  Be able to pipette and titrate to gain concordant results, including confidence

Titration:  A knowledge of the following volumetric determinations will be assumed: acids and alkalis using suitable indicators; iron (II), ethanedioic acid (and its salts), by potassium manganate (IV); iodine and sodium thiosulfate.  Simple titrations involving other reagents may also be set but, where appropriate, sufficient working details will be given.
