Gender and Crime Task: Write down a general trend that you think you know about gender and crime.

Aims and Objectives Aim – To develop an understanding of the different explanations of male versus female crime Objectives – Develop an understanding of evolutionary, biological and sociological explanations of male crime through the use of posters, worksheets, presentations and media analysis.

Why do men commit more crime? Men are naturally more aggressive? Socialisation; – Media – Family – Gender roles Female’s do not get caught? ACTIVITY: Create mind maps in groups discussing each of these possibilities in explaining higher rates of male offending (10 minutes)

Language Use in the Media How are males described as victims? How are males described as offenders? How are females described as victims? How are females described as offenders? TASK! Find recent newspaper articles to do with crime (preferably from a tabloid newspaper) and answer the questions above. Work in pairs

Task Develop an understanding of: – The Chivalry Thesis (and a critique) – Patriarchal Control – Functionalist Sex Role Theory – Class and Gender Deals – The liberation Thesis – Masculinity and Crime – Postmodernity, masculinity and crime Create a PowerPoint Presentation explaining all of these points. Use pictures, and Youtube.
