Measurement in Science
2
Standard Units Why Standard Units? Data sharing is easier Works in all languages Easier Math Metric System (based on 10) Length = meters (m) Mass (weight?) = kilograms (Kg) or grams (g) Volume = liters (L) Time = seconds (s) Temperature = degrees Celsius ( o C)
3
Why Celsius? Boiling point of water = 100 o C Freezing point of water = 0 o C Fahrenheit was derived from unreliable data sources
4
Choosing Units Scientists choose units that will result in the most meaningful numbers…try these Mass of a penny? Mass of an antibiotic dosage? Length of a caterpillar Diameter of a bacteria cell? Stay in the metric system and standard units Use the correct prefix to scale your units
5
Unit Conversions
6
Unit Conversions All metric units can be adjusted by factors of ten for easier use in different situations Kilo = 1000x Hecta = 100x Deca = 10x Deci = 1/10 Centi = 1/100 Milli = 1/1000 Micro = 1/1,000,000
