Circle words around them for context and attempt to define the unfamiliar words in the margins (look them up to check your definitions). 2.Put a box around tone words. What tone is present in the sentence/paragraph/passage? 3.Do you agree with the father’s advice to the narrator? Why or why not? Has your father or mother ever given you a piece of advice that you consider important? What?

4 4.Highlight any figurative language/figures of speech. What kind is it? What’s being compared? What does it mean? 5.Highlight (different color) adjectives that describe the narrator? How would you characterize him? 6.Highlight (different color) adjectives that describe Gatsby? How would you characterize him? 7.What does the narrator NOT tell us about himself? About Gatsby? Effect? 12.How does the narrator affect the reader’s perceptions about the story? 13.How does the narrator feel about Gatsby? How do you know?

6 Your Turn. Choose a section in chapter 1 to do a close reading. The section should be 1-2 pages in length and “fit together” in some logical way. You need to print off the section or complete directly in your book if you own one. All highlighting, note-taking, and sentences/work should be in the text. Your highlighted sections and margin notes should help illuminate the text for a specific reason (meaning, style, both) You should end with a conclusion about the passage. Its affect on the story as a whole. Its importance to character, plot, setting, or whatever. Be prepared to lead a small group through your close reading on Tuesday. Ergo, you’ll need to bring in your questions on handout as well AND print out 3 copies of the passage.
