1
The use of ICT in production Using CAD/CAM Applications Automation
2
Learning objectives To understand that CAD and CAM enable users to achieve higher levels and large scale accuracy, repeatability and efficiency To be aware of how CAD and CAM should feature in school project work To understand how ICT is used in the wider commercial context eg. communications To understand that companies rely heavily on automation- driven by computers
3
General applications in project work Word processing eg. surveys Desk top publishing eg. Pamphlets, user instructions 2 and 3-D illustration eg. Google sketch up for client presentations, 2-D designer (orthographic drawings) E-mailing eg. To obtain project feedback, locate component suppliers Web advertising and sales Managing databases eg. Sales, accounts, stock levels Market research eg. Through customer surveys Any others?
4
ICT in Design and manufacture CAD= Computer Aided Design, using powerful software packages that enable designers to develop products in 2 and 3 dimensions CAM= Computer Aided Manufacture, using systems to control and automate machinery Examples might include, a simple 2-D print/image capture, laser etched engraving, vinyl sign, 3 dimensional product from rapid prototyping machine.
5
Advantages/disadvantages of CAD and CAM? Discuss and list these with a partner.
6
More commercial applications of ICT Remote manufacturing (task sheet on a car) Computer modelling Automation and robotics FMS= Flexible manufacturing systems Video conferencing
7
KEY TERMS CAD CAM CNC Rapid prototyping Automation Remote manufacturing Computer modelling Flexible manufacturing systems Questions? Exam style questions from hand out
