BEARING PILES: H-PILE

BEARING PILES  Structural element, a post or pile, which transfers the weight of a foundation to soil that can support it.  Ideal for foundations of complex structures or where ground conditions are not easily penetrable.  Used in construction of highways, bridges, marine structures, commercial buildings, apartment complexes and more.  Multiple different bearing piles, including h-piling, which range in depth, size and reinforcement.

WHAT IS H-PILE?  Structural beams used in various industries for deep foundation applications  Because most top-surface layers of soil do not have the ability to support the construction of large structures, H-piling was specifically designed to transfer weight to soils deeper in the Earth capable of supporting the structure.  Driven into the ground with a pile driver

H-PILE SPLICES  Implemented to help align H-piles.  Eliminate need for full penetration weld – saving time during driving.  Provide additional weld area when splicing H-pile.H-pile  Allow for additional welding to be completed at a later time without delaying crew and construction.

H-PILE POINTS  The tip of H-pile that prevents damage during driving.  Able to drive through difficult soil conditions resulting in a deeper setting of the H- piling.  Absorb most of the impact.  H-pile with points prevent re-designing or extracting of the beams that could be damaged by rough soil and ground conditions – saving time, money and resources.

CHARACTERISTICS OF H-PILE  Strength – H-piling was designed to be driven into soil that would be difficult for other piling to penetrate including dense or water-bearing sand, and gravel.  Durability – Ideal for the construction of structures in areas known for earthquakes and other natural disasters.  Environmentally Friendly – Used in test piles to confirm strength and can be extracted, recycled and reused afterwards.  Versatile – H-piling can be shortened or lengthened on site to ensure the best fit for any application

ADVANTAGES OF UTILIZING H-PILING  Minimally displaces and/or disturbs the surrounding ground – ideal for urban areas or areas where moving the surrounding ground would cause problems for nearby structures.  Easy to handle and transport.  Reduce amount of time for construction and the amount of time spent on the job site.

CONTINUED  Easy to extract.  High penetration creates high tension loads.  Help avoid problems with water pressure or the collapsing of soils.  H-piles have a small perimeter which reduce the effect of negative friction.

DISADVANTAGES OF UTILIZING H-PILING  During driving, H-pile can slightly bend on its weak axis  H-pile that is driven into loose sand may not achieve enough resistance because the sand does not compact around the beams ideally.  Will corrode over time.  Can be relatively expensive upfront.
