PRACTICUMS & INTERNSHIPS Where to start Fill any gaps (missing knowledge and skills that are in demand) Be strategic- seek opportunities that may help you to become more marketable in your MPH job search later Think about where you may want to work post- MPH – get your foot in the door!

THINK ABOUT YOUR CAREER (AND PRACTICUM) EARLY It’s never too early to start! Let us know about your interests Attend Employer Events; Career PREP and/or Career Services workshops Have your resume and cover letter reviewed –include relevant class projects and be sure to tailor it for each target practicum Develop your 30-second Elevator Pitch; start networking!

HIRING TIMELINE AND COMPENSATION FOR PRACTICUMS Summer is the most common February and March - peak periods for practicum postings Most private sector firms (pharmaceutical, biotech, medical devices, contract research organization (CRO’s), academic medical centers conducting drug trials, health insurers evaluating drugs costs, consulting firms analyzing markets and pricing) pay an hourly rate Nonprofit organizations and government agencies are often unpaid If you ask someone to host you for a practicum, understand they may not have a budget to pay but it could be a valuable experience

HEALTH INSURANCE FIRM PROJECTS Design and maintain databases of formularies and pharmacy programs for program evaluations, competitor comparisons, and responses to request for proposals (RFPs) Summarize data and prepare reports of drug coverage by drug category and pharmacy program Design and maintain databases of pharmacist consultations, and prepare quarterly summary reports Support Clinical Pharmacy and Analysis & Reporting Teams in analysis of large data files

RESEARCH AND CONSULTING FIRM PROJECTS Pharma Market Access – analyzing burden of disease, analyzing reimbursement landscape, helping to determine value of treatment (i.e. why should doctor prescribe this drug over another?) Data Analysis (identifying trends in patient and claims data that lead to strategic decision making) Qualitative research with stakeholders such as physicians and payers; conduct literature reviews Value-based pricing support (can we show better outcomes, cost- effectiveness)
