Journal: 12/9/14 Investigation 1.2: Mixing Juice What strategies determine which mix is the most orangey? (Underline 2 or 3 key words in your question.) VOCABULARY: part-to-part ratio part-to-whole ratio
3
p.10
4
Mix A: 2 C. to 3 C. 2 : 3 2/3 40% to 60% part-to-part ratio: the relationship between one part and another part of a whole. part-to-whole: the relationship between one part of a whole and the whole. Mix A: 2 C. to 5 C. 2 : 5 2/5 40% of 100%
5
Mix A Using part-to-part (concentrate to water) or part-to-whole (concentrate to mix) comparisons.
6
Mix C part-to-part (concentrate to water) or part-to-whole (concentrate to mix) comparisons.
7
5/14 of Mix B is concentrate. Doug is correct. Part (5)-to-whole (14) Think: part-to-whole
8
Max’s thinking is incorrect. He subtracted the numerator from the denominator. In Mix A, each cup of concentrate goes with 1 ½ cups of water. In Mix C, however, each cup of concentrate goes with 2 cups of water. Using part-to-whole, you see that 2/5 is more orangey than 1/3 2/5 = 40% 1/3 = 33.3%
9
Mix A: Each 5 ‑ cup batch serves 10 people a half cup = 24 batches. Mix B: Each 14 ‑ cup batch serves 28 people a half cup = 9 batches. Mix C: Each 3 ‑ cup batch serves 6 people a half cup = 40 batches. Mix D: Each 8 ‑ cup batch serves 16 people a half cup = 15 batches. For Mix B, 43 and 77 are approximations. Why can’t you make exactly 120 cups with whole numbers by scaling up this recipe?
10
Mix A: 2/5 C. concentrate and 3/5 C. water. Mix B: 5/14 C. concentrate and 9/14 C. water. Mix C: 1/3 C. concentrate and 2/3 C. water. Mix D: 3/8 C. concentrate and 5/8 C. water.

Vocab toolkit:
17
1 Gallon = 128 oz. 1 : 3 (part to part) 1 : 4 (part to whole) x : 128 (scale factor of 32) 32 : 128 She needs 2 (16 oz.) cans!
18
15 oz. of lemonade concentrate 1 : 4 1/3 (part to part) 1 : 5 1/3 (part to whole) scale factor of 15 15 oz : 80 oz He needs a pitcher large enough to hold 80 oz.
19
1 = cans of concentrate 4 = amount of juice made in one recipe, in cans 128 = amount of juice she wants to make (oz.) x = Ounces of concentrate she needs
