Weather Tools ISN

Link List three tools you might use when making observations about weather

Essential Question How do you use tools to gather data about the weather? ?

Barometer Measures the air pressure in inches of mercury (in) or millibars (mb) There are two pointers: – The one inside the glass is the current reading – The one on top you move is the set pointer

Using the Barometer 1.Find the current reading. 2.Read the set pointer. 3.Write your findings down. 4.Compare the current reading to the set pointer – If the current reading is higher, then the air pressure is rising – If the current reading is lower, then the air pressure is falling This can let you know if a storm is coming.

Wind Vane Measures the direction from which the wind is coming from.

Using the Wind Vane 1.Using a compass, find north and set the vane so that the compass rose (not the movable arrow) points north. 2.Wait for the wind to blow. The arrow will point in the direction THE WIND IS COMING FROM! Winds are named by the direction they come from!

Anemometer Measures the wind speed in miles per hour

Using the Anemometer 1.Have one person use a stop watch or clock for a minute. 2.Have another person count the number of rotations in a minute. 3.This won’t be in miles per hour, but in rotations per minute

Rain Gauge Measures the amount of precipitation in inches or centimeters.

Using the Rain Gauge Rain gauges work just like a graduated cylinder, so measure to the meniscus.
