2 How much alcohol? One unit of alcohol is 10ml (8g) In a 300ml bottle of 5% alcohol beer, there are 1.5 units of alcohol. Your liver can clear approximately 1 unit of alcohol from your system every hour. If your drank 6 bottles, how long before you are sober??

3 How much alcohol? One unit of alcohol is 10ml (8g) In a 700ml bottle of 14% alcohol red-wine, there are 10 units of alcohol. Your liver can clear approximately 1 unit of alcohol from your system every hour. If your drank 1/2 a bottle, how long before you are sober??

4 How much alcohol? One unit of alcohol is 10ml (8g) In a 1000ml bottle of 40% alcohol vodka, there are 40 units of alcohol. Your liver can clear approximately 1 unit of alcohol from your system every hour. If your drank 4 double shots, how long before you are sober??

6 What’s a ‘binge’? In the UK, a ‘binge’ means drinking more than 10 units (e.g., 4 pints) in one night out. Apart from the health problems, there are social issues as well. Under-25s (including teenagers) who go on ‘binges’ are more likely to indulge in risky behaviour and break the law This causes huge costs to the NHS resulting from accidental injuries and violence, and leads to many arrests each week. Binge drinking is seen as a major problem in the UK.

7 Ext: how much of each drink = 1 unit? In a 300ml bottle of 5% alcohol beer, there are 1.5 units of alcohol. In a 700ml bottle of 14% alcohol wine, there are 10 units of alcohol. In a 1000ml bottle of 40% alcohol vodka, there are 40 units of alcohol. In a 3000L bottle of 7% alcohol cider, there are 21 units of alcohol. NB: 1 shot = 25ml 1wine-glass = 125ml

9 Units of Alcohol The size of some drinks may vary. At home people tend to pour larger measures than you get in a pub. Many pubs serve large glasses of wine (175ml, around 2 units) as standard. Many manufacturers are now stating how many units of alcohol each can or bottle contains:

10 Absorption of Alcohol The faster you absorb the alcohol, the higher your blood alcohol level will be. The more alcohol in your blood, the greater its effect will be. Absorption is more rapid if you: -drink quickly -add a fizzy mixer -drink on an empty stomach -are small, young or female
