Social Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Social Enterprise: ‘A business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners’ (DTI, 2002) Social Entrepreneurship: ‘The art of simultaneously pursuing both a financial and a social return on investment (the “double bottom line”)’ (Institute for Social Entrepreneurs, 2005) There are 15,000 Social Enterprises in the UK: 475,000 people involved in the sector as employees and volunteers; combined turnover of £18 billion (DTI, 2005)
