1 Centre for Education Futures: Futures Observatory Second Activity Report February 2016

2 The UWA Futures Observatory opened in November 2015 to provide a focus for the Centre for Education Futures’ Scholarship and Innovation stream. Its purpose is to: Promote and encourage UWA’s future thinking Inspire creativity and collaboration across disciplines and roles Enable external partnerships to provide differing mindsets for consideration Deploy emerging and consumer technologies for educators to experiment with a different frame of reference and be encouraged to look at new horizons in technology and innovation Provide a home and a focus for staff in receipt of Education Futures seed funding grants Improve student satisfaction and experience

4 Futures Observatory Deliverables20152016 Raise awareness and opportunity for engagement across UWA in innovation for learning and teaching 24 Grants were awarded all disciplines24 Grants will be awarded in 2016 ‘Futures First’ white papers’ on options and approaches The 1st white paper presented to the EFSG in November 2015 10 Published Papers Partnerships10 Technology Partners IdentifiedPartner Status, - signing theMO4U, (Mutual Opportunity for You document): 2 Partners have signed the Mo4U 5 Partners are in the process of signing the Mo4U We are discussion the Mo4U with a further 3 Partners FO open for ‘business’12 Events reaching over 400 academics and staff, showcasing interesting activities and technologies There will be a program of over 40 events Commencement of ‘Future Enthusiasts’ network at UWA Over 500 staff and academics in our ‘Futures Enthusiasts’ database Obtain an additional 1,000 additional staff and academics Establish UWA as a leader in education Horizon gazing in Australia Prof Salmon’s key notes at international conferences in South Africa and Berlin Prof Salmon: Presented at women’s Leadership Also been requested to present at Coursera conference in March Prof Salmon and Jill Benn are contributors to 2016 Australian NMC Horizon reports.

5 Deliverables20152016 Engagement and communicationsA specific social media plan for the Futures Observatory is in place. In addition to the above, the following activities are also taking place: Constant updating of the Futures Observatory website Social Media channels have opened The CEF Communication plan has been finalised of which the Futures Observatory is an integral part of. Establishing a Future Observatory Internal and External Advisory Committees Raising of awareness of UWA educational leadership Learning Technologists presented at the 2015 Blackboard Conference on the new CEF structure and Blackboard migration Learning Technologists presented a snapshot version of the Carpe Diem workshop at the WA multi university Teaching and Learning Forum, held at Curtin. Inspirational exemplars of achievements Exemplars were presented at the Blending with Blackboard conference Learning Technologists will run Carpe Diem Reality Check events showcasing Carpe Diem transformed units Display of research posters and outcomes resulting from the Education Futures Scholarship program ‘Orion Discovery’ events6 Orion Discovery event40 Orion Discovery Events are planned Collaborate with other UniversitiesThe 1st white paper identified several universities running similar or complimentary initiatives with whom we would be interested in developing a relationship. Currently identifying 2 partner universities to develop a relationship with.

6 Deliverables20152016 Raise awareness of up and coming technologies Events Events have been videoed and are in the process of being edited to be shared via the Futures Observatory website Carpe diem learning design workshops now include a visit to the Observatory and Media Room Release of a new unit for academic staff (Transforming Teaching for Learning) includes futures thinking activities Increase the reputation of UWA as an innovator in Teaching and Learning In November and December over 400 academics and staff attended events as well as experienced the latest disruptive technologies showcased in the Futures Observatory. There will be a program of over 40 events Attract Industry Partners Currently in discussion with the following Industry partners: Woodside PwC CCIWA (Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Future Student Events Prof Salmon contributes to ‘Futures Courses’ competition. Panel being formed of Students to be involved in all CEF activities Showcase Academics research proposals The Futures Observatory will showcase academic research outcomes and display research posters resulting from the Education Futures Scholarship program

8 Futures Thinking: Exploration of education futures thinking and observations. Interactive workshops. Facilitated by Prof Gilly Salmon. Once a month between 12noon – 1pm. EVENTS 2016 Reality Checks: Opportunity to relay experiences and impact of integrating emerging technologies. Share ideas or opportunities for research. Facilitated by a Learning Technologist. Once a month between 12noon – 1pm. Orion Discovery: Showcase emerging technologies in collaboration with major partners and UWA community experts. Learning Technologists to facilitate dialogue and engage participants. Once a week between 12noon – 1pm. Other: Futures Enthusiasts. CEF and UWA (e.g.: IQ) partners. Align with CEF’s goals and missions. Ad hoc.
