3 Info-Tech Research Group3 Executive summary Mobile ERP is a form of process optimization. Info-Tech research indicates that process improvement can result in benefits such as: ◦ 10% reduction in frequency of service or product delivery delays. ◦ 10% reduction in error rates. ◦ 15% improvement in cycle times. Mobile ERP isn’t for everyone. Organizations need to evaluate their enterprise goals, business processes, and management mobility levels to determine if mobile ERP is right for them. Don’t assume that mobile ERP is right for your organization. You can pursue mobile ERP regardless of your mobile development maturity level. Third parties operate to serve organizations who have little experience in developing mobile applications. Use these third parties to build mobile maturity in your organization. Focus on benefits when building the business case. Mobile development costs are commoditized. Opportunity quantification will be the central driver for the business case. Use the Mobile ERP Opportunity Assessment to help guide your business case efforts. Requirements gathering is the hard phase of the mobile ERP project. Focus on data flow. Mobile ERP is all about getting the right data to the right people at the right time. Form factor, platform, and application requirements will all flow out of a thorough analysis of the data flow between your ERP system and the application. Usability is a key success factor when building a mobile ERP application. Hire a mobile user interface designer to help guide you through the process. UX consultancy is money well spent. ERP vendors are talking mobile, but only the big players. As the mobile ERP service offering matures, mobile ERP will become more accessible via your vendor. Train end users like you would any other ERP project. Documentation and training are still key success factors for implementing a successful ERP project.

4 Info-Tech Research Group4 There are many schools of thought on mobile ERP applications – most are wrong 1.Mobile applications are only good when I have a young and tech savvy workforce! False. Mobile applications are appropriate for a wide range of users. Anybody who needs to access or input data away from a computer workstation will benefit from mobile ERP. 2.Mobile is only appropriate for customer-oriented applications! False (mostly). Most mobile application development has focused on customer-facing applications. For example, companies have developed mobile applications to improve brand image or to facilitate customer-centric processes like ordering or service. However, enterprises are increasingly looking to mobile applications to improve their internal processes. Some of these process are customer-oriented (e.g. mobile product configurator applications to improve order entry) but others are completely internal (e.g. a mobile Kanban system). 3.Mobile support is absolutely crucial for ERP success! False. Many ERP vendors are attempting to push this view, but the truth is that not every enterprise needs mobile ERP capabilities. It is essential to determine if you can support mobile ERP, if you need ERP, and to assess your requirements.

5 Info-Tech Research Group5 Learn from the most popular mobile applications: games Kingdom Rush is a tower defense game released by Armor Games in mid-2011. iPad and Android versions followed. Fans received the game well and it became a surprise hit, particularly considering that it was developed by Ironhide Game Studio, three guys in Uruguay! Apply Ironhide’s experiences to the development of your mobile ERP application. Kingdom Rush ‘Behind the Scenes’!Kingdom Rush ‘Behind the Scenes’! Presented by Alvaro Azofra, Gonzalo Sande, and Pablo Realini. Flash Gaming Summit 2012. March 4, 2012.

6 Info-Tech Research Group6 Develop a concept, build a prototype, and monitor usage These practices should be applied to any mobile development effort, including the creation of a mobile ERP application. In a 2012 presentation, the Kingdom Rush team revealed that a successful mobile application isn’t about luck – it’s about careful planning. Specifically: 1.Develop a good concept. For a mobile ERP, you must develop a good business case. 2.Create a prototype to identify and fix problems. 3.Monitor usage to determine where and when problems might occur.
