2 ABOUT THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION  founded in year 1979 and is the oldest faculty at the University of Lapland  the faculty has about 700 basic degree students, 80 postgraduate students, 60 staff and also 60 staff in the teacher training school  focus areas: special characteristics of Northern areas Sámi culture and people education in sparsely-populated areas inclusive education  international faculty – collaborates with over 30 universities abroad  the dean is Päivi Naskali 2

4 THE UNITS CENTRE FOR MEDIA PEDAGOGY (CMP)  established 2001  coordinates and participates teaching, research and development projects in the field of media education and the educational use of information and communication technologies (ICTs)  research is focused for example on the following areas: internet in the lives of individuals development of new pedagogical models and methods for knowledge co-creation transdisciplinary research on learning environments involving play and games, simulations and virtual reality conceptual frameworks for playful and creative learning mobile network-based teaching and learning pedagogically appropriate use of ICTs and digital videos media cultures in contemporary societies 4

5 THE UNITS UNIT FOR GENDER STUDIES  established 2005 – studies since 1989  focus on education, social phenomena and cultural meanings from the gender perspective  also take into account other differences such as age, sexuality and cultural differences between people  the interdisciplinary research deals with questions of gendered meanings of education, work, cultural representations, feminist pedagogy, and sustainable development with the emphasis of the northern culture and welfare  in strong collaboration with scholars from other faculties and the Arctic Centre 5

6 THE UNITS UNIT FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION  established 1983  provides continuing education that increases professional competence and offers new tools for education professionals  also organizes short-term courses that answer to clients’ and labour markets’ wants and needs  co-ordinates projects with actors of working life (external financing)  provides also self-financed education 6

7 STUDYING AT THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION The basic degrees:  Bachelor of Arts (Education), BA, 180 ECTS takes three years Kasvatustieteen kandidaatti in Finnish  Master of Arts (Education), MA, 120 ECTS takes two years Kasvatustieteen maisteri in Finnish The post-graduate degrees:  Licentiate of Philosophy (Education)  Doctor of Philosophy (Education)  Doctor of Philosophy, Ph. D. or PhD 7

8 STUDYING AT THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION  in spring 2012 there were 1432 applicants for studies in the faculty, but only 60 applicants are accepted in educational studies and 64 for Class Teacher Training  the studies of a bachelor’s degree are jointly organized between Education, Adult Education and Media Education  after a bachelor’s degree a student will specialize to one of the three major subjects  MA in Media Education is offered completely in English there is also a separate intake to the MA in Media Education - programme for international degree students 8

10 RESEARCH AND TEACHING AREAS EDUCATION  educational phenomena from diverse viewpoints  education’s historical and philosophical bases  questioning through theoretical basis and designing of teaching  education’s cultural and social connections CLASS TEACHER TRAINING  research concentrates especially on development of teacher’s professional identity, reflection and inclusive education and also subject specific didactic research 10

11 MAIN POINTS OF THE CLASS TEACHER TRAINING  one must have a MA degree to be a qualified teacher  the class teacher training educates strong experts in pedagogy and didactics who can work creatively and pliably in varied circumstances who has a strong identity and ability to co-operative work  the main points of the studies are inclusive education and also researching and reflective teacherhood  co-operating, integration of theory and practice and exploratory learning are emphasized in the teaching  Teacher Training School is part of the Faculty of Education is responsible for organizing the practice and training periods for the primary/class teacher trainees and other students 11

12 12 PRACTICING IN THE CLASS TEACHER TRAINING The practices and their themes:  Guided orientation practice (3 ECTS): understanding pupils and orientation to teacherhood  Guided pedagogical teaching practice (3 ECTS): practice of pedagogical basic skills  Subject specific didactic teaching practice (5 ECTS): adaption of didactic skills  Guided field teaching practice (6 ECTS): teacher in a dynamic and progressive school community  Guided advanced teaching practice (9 ECTS): wide-ranging and progressive teacherhood

13 EDUCATIONAL USE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICTs) (in Finnish 25 ECTS + 35 ECTS)  using ICTs in teaching and learning, guiding and coordinating and also doing research in formal and informal learning environments GLOBAL EDUCATION (in English 25 ECTS)  aims at building educational and community capacity by fostering inclusive world citizenship and promoting sustainable globalization SPECIAL EDUCATION (in English 25 + 35 ECTS)  provides tools to understand and deal with diversity in education  covers issues related to individual differences in intelligence, behaviour and communication  looks at cultural and social explanations of diversity BASIC STUDIES (25 ECTS) AND INTERMEDIATE STUDIES (35 ECTS) MINOR SUBJECTS 13

14 EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY (in Finnish 25 ECTS + 35 ECTS)  focus on learning, teaching, education and growth; applies theoretical knowledge in concrete educational work and psychological problems Love-based leadership is one of the research focuses and university’s main projects; it has interdisciplinary approach and it focuses on "caring leadership”Love-based leadership GENDER STUDIES (in English 25 ECTS)  covers issues concerning the culture of gender in northern regions and gendered meanings in the culture of education 14
