2
Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level Adapting the supply chain and build process to deliver low-impact buildings quickly, economically, at scale, and with low levels of defects that meet current requirements and target performance. To do this TSB are asking the industry to: devise novel process tools, products, services or contractual processes that improve the efficiency of activities on-site AND make a strong connection between economic business benefits with the quality, consistency, and affordability needed to deliver sustainable buildings. The challenge is….

Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level Background: Government and industry context IGT report - Morrell’s challenge of reducing standard construction costs by 10-30% The delivery of zero or close to zero carbon buildings for the cost of a standard build today Francis Maude’s “beat the benchmark” of 20% public sector savings from procurement reforms A couple of decades of continuous improvement tools and processes. Looking for the significantly innovative changes

Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level Industry drivers for build process improvement Cost base reduction - reduction in process waste and inefficiency Speed of build, and impact on availability of cash / funding cycle Quality - assured performance expectations / compliance Simplified solutions - integrated suppliers and design teams / developing and keeping know-how close Market opportunity and differentiation - mass customisation, or affordable product improvements
5
Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level Learning from earlier competitions –highlighting where failures occur in design and construction, and how design decisions are made –using the experience of AIM-C4 as a springboard Encouraging diagnostic thinking, then radical root and branch rethink of process and relationships, not incremental improvement. Tools and techniques, innovative products or novel procedures with commercial benefit : –from contractual/ procurement arrangements to BIM Strong process/ organisational innovation, collaboration and culture, as well as new technologies or products Our aims for this call

Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level What kind of activities might be funded? procurement workshops to integrate suppliers earlier applying technologies/processes such as just-in-time, barcodeing or RFDI tracking to new contexts such as site management and logistics Competition covers research, design, procurement, and construction activities such as: apply technologies/processes from other industries, including new uses of BIM or augmented reality to transform buildability, reduce defects and wastage
7
Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level What kind of activities might be funded? Wide range of indicative examples in brief, at all stages of the design and construction process http://www.innovateuk.org/content/competition/rethinking-the- build-process.ashx Design tools improving early decisions Procurement, contract or warranty agreements Peer-to peer supplier relationships New approaches to compliance commissioning and handover
8
Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level Larger players with SME involvement New or unusual collaborations eg clients procuring similar buildings or groups of contractors Replicability and continuity of relationship and ability to demonstrate large roll out potential Who would we like to see involved? Collaborative consortia, led by those influential developers, main contractors repeat clients with ongoing programmes, who can work closer with their supply chain
9
Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level New buildings from both the domestic and non-domestic sectors Development costs of at least £3M, or with convincing evidence for extensive roll out Refurbishment or retrofit excluded, but new build fit-out is eligible Must have low environmental impact aims to a recognised industry standard Research applied to a live construction project or a programme of projects To be trialled on a live construction project, before assessing its effectiveness and potential for future commercialisation
10
Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level With a committed programme and team, and client commitment to proceed Evidence of building owner/ client permission at Full stage Project should have planning permission, or be close to gaining it. If not in place there needs to be justification in the application. Planning needed when contracts agreed by end 2012. Research project lasting up to 4 years Research applied to a live construction project or a programme of projects Project must be at early enough stage for build process to be influenced
11
Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level Single call for Collaborative Research and Development Up to £4M available Two stage competition; an Expression of Interest with an invited second full stage application. Up to 15 projects receiving between £150k - £1M 50% grant for applied research (or 25% for experimental development) - looking to former Level of funding requested should reflect the degree of innovation and the range of issues tackled not size of construction project Competition Format

Is the consortia led by / contains organisations in a position to work with, and positively influence their supply chain and to apply the innovative process to the trial building? Does the project convincingly address the challenges outlined in the brief in a significant and transformative way? Is it in scope? Is the project to be trialled on a new build building project or series of projects? Will the project be completed within 4 years? Does the building project have low environmental impact aims to a recognised industry standard? Does the project have building owner consent? Gateway questions:

Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles – Second level Third level What we don’t want Not funding construction or normal delivery costs Not tweaking or tuning of existing processes Not refurbishment ( see Invest in innovative refurbishment competition) Not one-off demonstrations - looking for commercial replicability and roll out Looking beyond best practice - looking for significant innovation
