3 Personal Savings Rate

4 Objectives: Have the students learn about economics and financial education and have fun doing so. Students compete by accumulating points by correctly answering questions and giving sound advice. There are fifteen game missions which allows students to explore concepts rather than be taught them. Key feature of Gen I – It rewards players for both good investing but also good advice. Bad advice and bad investing will cost you points.

5 Mission Overview As an operative, your goal is to help conquer the Murktide, which has infested the world with widespread financial despair. Your objective is to accomplish the mission you are assigned by the Gen I commander, Monique. Along the way, you'll want to earn as many points as possible to help your team achieve the highest score and earn a promotion for yourself. How do you do this? Teacher Guide online

6 Fifteen Missions 1. Building Wealth Over the Long Term. Help Angela build wealth for the long run. 2. Investing in Human Capital (Job Choice): Help Verona choose a tentative career. 3. Investing in Human Capital (Education): Help Matt to consider whether to continue formal education after he graduates from high school. 4. Budgeting: Help the O'Neil's save $300 a month for a down payment on a new home. 5. Credit: Teach Justin about credit.

7 Features: Interactive, web based computer game. Based on our Learning, Earning and Investing publications. Game is a mixture of economic and financial concepts. Either teacher controlled or playable as a stand alone lesson Much more effective as a supplement to sound classroom instruction. Game can be used as an early or late introduction strategy either teacher controlled or let them. Can be used in conjunction with Stock Market Game (SMG), Virtual Stock Exchange or any other stock market game.

9 Gen I Revolution versus SMG: Can be used as a compliment to the Stock Market Game (missions 1, 6, 8, 9. 10, 11, 12, 13) Gen I designed to complement not compete with SMG. Gen I rewards players for diversification which can reduce the chance of above average gains Gen I rewards the buying of mutual funds where other games may not.

11 Getting Started How to manage classes Click classes – Create a class Allow students to register Click view page (allow for editing, deleting, de- activating, and assigning teams). Hints: Keep calculator and note pad available Be patient with tutorials Stat with Mission 1 Don’t try to assess until you see how the game works.

12 Overview of Play Help your team achieve the highest score and earn a promotion for yourself. Read the Mission Brief carefully. Choose team operatives who can assist you in solving the mission. Review the 4-1-1 tutorial to build your knowledge of the mission. Build credibility with your operatives at each step in the mission. Battle the Murktide armed with answers. Accomplish the mission with a winning solution.

13 Step by Step Underground: Pre-Mission Situation Map Click the Situation Map on the Underground. Operatives Click the ARROW buttons to view all operatives. If you want to add the operative to your team, first look at the operative's point value and determine if you have enough swap points to "hire" this person. If so, drag the person's image to your "Current Team of Operatives."

14 Step by Step The Mission Start the Mission Click the START MISSION button. Answer each Profile Match question. View the Mission Contact information. Review The 4-1-1 Review The 4-1-1 in the Backpack to gather background information and earn knowledge points playing the mini-games

16 Missions 6. Risk and Return: Advise Kai on how to invest his grandmothers $10,000. 7. Alternative Financial Institutions : Convince Paul, Fred and Diana to reconsider their choice of financial institution. 8. Stocks : Help Uncle Louie learn the basics about stocks. 9. Bonds: Teach Tyrone and Felicia how to invest in bonds. 10. Mutual Funds: Teach a group of students how to invest in mutual funds.

17 Missions 11. Researching Companies: Advise a Gen I $10 million donor on her investment. 12. Stock Market Fundamentals: Show Jasmine what determines stock prices. 13. Stock Market Crashes: Advise Markos on how to weather a crash in the scholarship fund. 14. Forecasting the Future : Advise political leaders on their economic forecasts. 15. Financial Planning: Conduct the Red Roosters annual financial planning workshop.

21 Step by Step Work Through Each Step in the Mission Use the GeoLocator to explore the different environments looking for clues. Click each of your team operatives and answer their questions to earn credibility points. If an operative doesn't have any questions, they are not a good fit for the mission. Consider going back to the Underground and swapping that operative for another one, if you have earned enough swap points to make the trade. Click on Monique's image to get her advice before you battle the Murktide. When you feel you have enough credibility, click the Battle icon to challenge the Murktide. If you are successful, you will advance to the next step in the mission. Watch for Monique's goggles to glow. If you have enough knowledge points, you can spend some of them to click on the goggles for a glimpse into the future. There, you will find information that will help you solve the mission. Complete all steps in the mission by looking for clues, earning credibility, and battling the Murktide.

24 Step by Step Solve the Mission After you complete the final step, the Mission Brief will open. Review the Mission Brief one final time. Click the SOLVE MISSION button. Solve the mission by answering the questions. If you are successful, you will be promoted in the Gen I Revolution and the Murktide will recede for your mission contact.

27 Scavenger Hunt Find the mission in which an online checking account record is examined and withdrawals are placed in one of 8 categories. Find the mission in which fundamental analysts select promising stocks using share price, P/E ratio, annual revenue, and EPS. Find the mission in which 3 criteria are identified when making a decision to use credit in future purchasing decisions. Find the mission in which phases of the business cycle are explored.

28 Assessment: Can use a students score as a grade. Score is based on: Use of exploring clues Avoidance of guessing Choosing operations with skill Completing all credibility questions Composing the Score: Total mission points= Credibility plus Knowledge + Battle + Solution + Bonus Points – (Points used on Monica’s glasses or swapping operatives).
