Quiz For Christians around the world, the celebration of what day took place last Sunday?  Easter  Jesus’ Resurrection

Resurrection Appearances 18 Gospel references 11 appearances (5 in the first day) Jesus’ appearances had specific purposes

Resurrection Appearances Sunday – At the tomb –Luke 24:6-11; John 20:3-9 Sunday – On the road to Emmaus –Luke 24:13-35 Sunday – To the ten disciples in upper room –Luke 24:36-48 Sunday – One week later: to the eleven disciples in upper room – John 20:19-31 Sometime later on the Mount of Galilee to the eleven disciples –Matthew 28:16-17 Jesus’ ascension from the Mount of Galilee –Acts 1:4-6

Resurrection Appearances Sunday – Women at the Tomb - Luke 24 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'“ 8 Then they remembered his words… 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

Resurrection Appearances Sunday – Peter and John at the Tomb - John 20 3 So Peter and the other disciple (John) started for the tomb. 6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

Resurrection Appearances Sunday – On the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32) 16 but they were kept from recognising him. 19 "What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people… 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.

Resurrection Appearances Sunday – On the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32) 25 He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"

Resurrection Appearances Sunday – To the Ten Disciples - Luke 24:36-48 36 …Jesus himself stood among them… 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.“ 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?“ 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

Resurrection Appearances Sunday – To the Ten Disciples - Luke 24:36-48 44 He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.

Resurrection Appearances Sunday – One Week Later: To the 11 Disciples - John 20:24 24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.“ 28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" 29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Resurrection Appearances Sometime later on the Mount of Galilee to the Eleven Disciples - Matthew 28:16-17 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted.

Resurrection Appearances Jesus’ Ascension from the Mount of Galilee - Acts 1:4-6 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

Resurrection Blindspots Did not recognise nor understand Jesus as a resurrected being Did not understand the prophesy of Scripture Did not understand Jesus’ own words explaining these things prior to His resurrection Expected another kind of Messiah with a another kind of mission – they didn’t know what to do next

Takeaway Points Jesus was ‘resurrected’ – unique event OT Scripture and Jesus’ words foretold it exactly Jesus proved His authority as Son of & sent by God It proved He accomplished mission of salvation His disciples and followers hadn’t understood before It was imperative they understood now He had final instructions for them (the …now what?)

…now what? 1. Be Clothed in the Power of the Holy Spirit Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.“ Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;

…now what? 2. Deliver the message of the forgiveness of sins through the salvation offered by Jesus John 20:22-23 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.“ Luke 24:47 …and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

…now what? 3. Make disciples of Jesus: teach what Jesus taught Matt 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

…now what? 4. Along the way, feed and care for Jesus’ ‘sheep’ John 21:17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.

…now what? 5. Do this everywhere Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.“

…now what? 1.Be clothed in the power of the Holy Spirit 2.Deliver the message of forgiveness of sins through the salvation offered by Jesus 3.Make disciples of Jesus: teach what He taught 4.Along the way, feed and care for the ‘sheep’ 5.Do this everywhere
