2
Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Aims Learning Outcome 2 Know the issues affecting the development of a sustainable built environment http://www.edexcel.com/migrationdocume nts/BTEC%20Firsts%20from%202010/BF 021800-Firsts-Construction-Issue3.pdfhttp://www.edexcel.com/migrationdocume nts/BTEC%20Firsts%20from%202010/BF 021800-Firsts-Construction-Issue3.pdf
3
Objectives To recap on the term sustainability and how global warming is effecting the planet. To define the term Built Environment To identify the issues associated with the provision of a sustainable built environment (P3) To describe the issues associated with the provision of a sustainable built environment (P4)
4
Introduction The are two categories to examine with regard to sustainability issues Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Built EnvironmentSocial and economic issues Nature of the built environmentMeeting local and national needs Greenfield and Brownfield sitesBusiness and employment opportunities Urban RegenerationSkills development Zero carbon house
5
Built environment Define the term built environment ‘Built environment refers to the man made environments made to provide settings for housing, buildings, businesses, estates and cities.’ In the UK what contains the built environment spreading? Green Belt Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction The creation of fourteen national parks has help to contain urban conurbations and keep them linked to the natural environment
6
Nature of the built environment Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction People have been altering our built environment for thousands of year, expanding from villages into towns and major cities; very little natural landscape is left. Some of our heritage is protected through the graded listing of historical buildings by English Heritage. – name at least two listed buildings, one in Wales the other in England Erddig – Wrexham Daily Express Building - Manchester
7
Impact on the natural environment We all need buildings to live in. As population levels have risen, housing developments have grown from villages to towns to cities reaching far into the countryside. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction

Greenfield and Brownfield sites In the past the tradition was to develop ‘greenfield’ sites untouched areas of land that have not been built on. Now the sustainable approach is to recycle derelict sites know as ‘brownfield’ sites. These sites are often contaminated which has to be dealt with the infrastructure around the site will need to be improved. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
10
Our duty to present and future generations Urban regeneration is one technique the industry can adopt. Cities such as Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool have all benefitted from urban regeneration carried out with the environment in mind. Following the construction of the A55 tunnel in 1991 Conwy marina was developed Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction The construction industry must change some of its traditional ways of operating if it is to help safeguard and maintain the environment for future generations. – WHY?
11
The home of the future The government’s long term target is to produce a ‘zero carbon’ home. This would be carbon neutral in its construction and be carbon free in its running costs. All new houses by 2016 will have to be ‘zero carbon ’ Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction http://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=aDqCdWnxmQc

What are the social and economic issues? Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction Built EnvironmentSocial and economic issues Nature of the built environmentMeeting local and national needs Greenfield and Brownfield sitesBusiness and employment opportunities Urban RegenerationSkills development Zero carbon house
13
Meeting local needs Sustainability must meet the needs of the local community involved. For example it is no good constructing cycle pathways too far from a city because people will still use their cars. Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
14
Meeting national needs Employment opportunities must be considered both local and national, as must the movement of labour around the country. Rail is a greener option, as the rail system has already been modernised through electrification Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
15
Employment opportunities Sustainability brings new opportunities for business. For example; recycling industry has seen tremendous growth and the manufacture of wind turbines. Why do you think this is this important? Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction http://www.dailypost.co.uk/busines s/business-news/flintshire- recycling-firm-expand-after- 6338350
16
Skills development The introduction of sustainability into the built environment provides people the chance to develop new skills Make a list of four new technologies Combined heat and power installation Solar panel installation Solar Hot Water Heater Wind turbine installation Rain water harvesting Geothermal Heat Pump Dual Flush Toilets Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
17
Recap The issues we have looked at are: Choose two from column 1 and two from column 2 issue to describe Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction
18
Assignment Task IssuesDescription Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction List four of the issues we have discussed today (P3) then provide a description of each one (P4)
