1 NORTHWEST ENERGY EFFICIENCY ALLIANCE Northern Climate HPWH Spec Update

2 Objectives Share timeline and direction Provide overview of major changes to Northern Climate Specification (NCS) Encourage feedback

3 Why a Northern Climate Spec? Ensure energy savings & customer satisfaction in “Northern” climates  Reliable energy savings in real world, real climate conditions  Ensure customer satisfaction with hot water delivery, noise, reliability, etc. Long term goal: Incorporate into Federal standards (DOE and Energy Star)

4 Timeline and Direction First version released October 28, 2009 Discussions held with all major US mfgs and numerous European and Asian mfgs  Testing done on GE, AO Smith, Rheem, Air Generate. Planned: Bosch, Skysea  Expect several to meet either Tier 1 or Tier 2 of new standard  Comments provided to Energy Star June 24 th  Goal: Completion of updated standard Aug 31

5 Specification Contents  Scope: Integrated units only, split-systems in future  Energy Star compliance  Product Tiering  Northern Climate Energy Factor  Northern Climate Delivery Rating  Sound levels  Freeze Protection  Warranty/Service  Compressor shut-down/notification  Ducting Condensate Management  Air filters: maintenance/notification NEW Updated NEW Updated

6 Introduction: Product Tiers Minimum Northern Climate EF (TBD values) Minimum “Northern Climate” Features Sound levels (TBD values) Tier 1 TBD  ENERGY STAR compliance dBA < 60 (garages, crawl spaces, attics) +dbA < 55 (interior) Tier 2 TBDTier 1 plus:  Freeze protection  Exhaust ducting  Compressor shut-down/notification  10 year Warranty  Condensate Mgmt  Air Filter Mgmt dBA < 60 (garages, crawl spaces, attics) +dbA < 55 (interior) Tier 3 TBDTier 2 plus:  Intake ducting +dBA < 55 (garages, crawl spaces, attics) +dbA < 50 (interior)

7 Northern Climate Energy Factor Concept: Calculate an Energy Factor (EF NC ) representative of performance for equipment installed in unconditioned, house buffer spaces (e.g. garages and unheated basements) in northern climates. Process: Leverage existing EF (at 67 °F) with additional measurement and calculations to determine EF NC  Conduct one (or two) additional EF tests at 40 or 50 °F  Determine compressor “shut-off” temp  Use weighted distribution of temperature bins  Calculate single EF NC value

10 Still under development: EF NC  Representative temperature bins  Climates and install locations  Require EF40 or EF50, or both?  Draw patterns for EF40 and EF50  Procedure for determining compressor cut-off

11 Northern Climate Delivery Rating Concept: Rate units on ability to deliver hot water in cool ambient conditions while maintaining high efficiency operation in the default operating mode. Reported in how many showers the water heater can give until the outlet temperature gets too cold or the efficiency drops significantly (resistance element turns on). Will not be used to determine Northern Climate Spec compliance, but rather a sizing aid for consumers
