Counter Reformation “Catholic” Reforms in the Catholic Church took place in response to the Protestant Reformation Reforms made to help Catholics remain loyal Encouraged daily devotion – helped cleanse the soul

Jesuits Ignatius of Loyal, leader of the reformation and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) Jesuits did 3 things: Found superb schools, convert non- Christians, & stop the spread of Protestantism

Council of Trent 2 Reforming Popes: Paul III & Paul IV (1 reform - Council of Trent) Council of Trent (created to clarify 4 issues for the Catholics) 1. Church’s interpretation of the Bible was final 2. Need faith & good works for salvation 3. The Bible & Church tradition were equally powerful authorities for guidance 4. Indulgences were valid expressions of faith

English Reformation England’s monarchs change the legal church A king’s desire for divorce, he wanted/needed a son King says the Pope is no longer in charge of the church Monarchs created a new church, Anglican, & put themselves in control of it

King Henry VIII Henry VIII, King of England, married Catherine of Aragon – no sons, 1 daughter (Mary) Wants younger queen, asks for a divorce & the church/pope won’t grant 1 Asked Pope to annul (set aside) the marriage – Pope won’t Reformation Parliament: Henry asks parliament (govt) to end pope’s power in England

Act of Supremacy: Parliament ends the pope’s power & names Henry head of the church Marries Anne Boleyn (will be executed for treason) – no sons, 1 daughter Elizabeth I Marries Jane Seymour (dies from complications) – 1 son Edward VI Henry marries 3 more times, no kids

Henry’s Children Edward rules (age 9) with help as a Protestant, dies at 16 Mary rules as a Catholic & prosecutes Protestants, dies from cancer Elizabeth rules as a Protestant & creates the Anglican church (blending Catholic & Protestant beliefs) – ruled for 42 yrs.
