Warm up: Give a detailed account of your second class Friday. Who was missing? Who left the classroom? What were you wearing? Name as many particular details of that class as you can. Do the same thing, but in regards to your lunch break, exactly two weeks ago. Do the same thing, but in regards to the first two hours after school, exactly six weeks ago. If you can remember quite a bit, explain why that day stood out for you. As you are listening to the podcast Serial, complete the guiding questions.Serial Reflection—visualization/mind map exercise A Mind Map is a technique for recording and organizing your ideas and thoughts—see samples on the slides that follow October 6, 2015

Warm up: If the Serial episode we listened to yesterday were an image, what would it look like? Draw that image now. Share/discuss Brainstorm a list of characteristics of written texts, visual texts, and spoken texts. What are the similarities and differences of those mediums? How does each change the effect of the story? Create class list—discuss how the podcast as a medium is different from a written or visual text As you listen to Destiny Mabry’s podcast, design a visual mind map that illustrates the theme, structure, and/or narrative techniques of the storyDestiny Mabry’s Share mind maps and discuss the podcast October 7, 2015

1.Start at the center of a blank landscape page, and draw a colorful image to represent your subject. 2.Use words and pictures to depict the story you want to tell throughout the map. Wherever possible use single KEY words, printed along a line. Each word or image should sit on its own line. 3.The lines make associations between ideas as clear as possible. Make them flowing and organic, each line the same length as the word or image. Always ensure that lines connect to the end of the line at the previous level. Typically lines will be thicker at the center and thinner further out. 4.Experiment with different ways of linking and emphasizing different aspects of your topic. Use highlighters, codes, and arrows as necessary. 5.The structure that should develop will be a radiant hierarchy, with ideas radiating out from your central theme and main branches. 6.Have fun and see where it takes you! Warm up: Share/discuss We will listen to our final podcast today, a narrative argument from the series called InvisibiliaInvisibilia As you listen, create a visual mind map that illustrates the theme/claim, narrative techniques, and/or structure of the story Share mind maps and discuss Introduce podcast project and discuss October 8, 2015

In order to demonstrate your learning in this unit, you will create a podcast that employs narrative techniques in order to tell a powerful story that relays a message (theme) or states a claim about an issue relevant to the book. You have a choice about HOW you will tell the story. Choose from the following— Podcast Project
10
1. A fictional account of a protagonist overcoming obstacles similar to those of Wes Moore. If you choose this option, you will need to fully develop a character, create a major conflict for the character to cope with, and conclude the story so that the conflict has some sort of resolution. You must utilize narrative techniques such as imagery, foreshadowing, and descriptive details, and you should develop a theme or message through the course of the story. 2. A true account of two people (you, a groupmate, someone from history or pop culture) overcoming obstacles similar to those of the two Wes Moores, but at some point the paths of the two people diverge. If you choose this option, you will need to fully develop each character and the conflict they each encounter, and conclude the story so the conflict has some sort of resolution. You must utilize narrative techniques such as imagery, foreshadowing, and descriptive details, and you should develop a theme or message through the course of the story. 3. A narrative argument that makes a claim about an issue relevant to the book, but uses narrative and storytelling techniques to develop the argument. If you choose this option, you will need to state a claim relevant to the book, determine how you will structure the piece to create the most impact, and include various anecdotes of one story or multiple stories to support your claim. You must utilize narrative techniques such as imagery, foreshadowing, and descriptive details, and you should develop a theme or message through the course of the story. Podcast Project Options

Warm up: Gallery walk of mind maps As you are viewing the different Mind Maps, use post-it notes to write comments, suggestions, and/or questions to your peers. Try to comment on at least 4 Mind Maps. Do not crowd around one Mind Map. Only one or two people at one Mind Map at the same time. Remember we are in the hallway so there is NO Talking! When you walk into the room, put your phone in the pocket, sit with your group, and take one of the markers in the center of the table. Wait for further instructions. I will give each group your sheet of butcher paper you prepared during yesterday’s class The member of the group responsible for the baseline story idea should review the idea with the group I will guide the class through silent questioning of the story idea Share questions and discuss with your group I will guide the class through silent brainstorming for the story idea Share ideas and discuss with your group I will provide each member of the group with an outline template. Your group should work together to create an outline for your podcast. Each member of the group must turn in an outline today. Tomorrow, we will use the outlines to being drafting scripts for our podcasts! October 13, 2015
17
You will need color pencils or markers for our warm up today. Please grab some on your way in the door. Warm up: Individually scan the outline your group created yesterday. Annotate the outline as follows— 1.Underline parts of your plan that you really love and think are working well in one color 2.Underline parts of your plan that you think might need development or tweaking in another color 3.Underline the part of your outline that you prefer to write in a third color 4.Underline the part of your outline that you would prefer not to write in a fourth color 5.Create a key for the colors at the top of your page In your group, discuss your reflections on the outlines you created Decide who will work on which part of the outline Work individually or in pairs to write parts of the script which you will synthesize tomorrow to create one cohesive script Reflection: What is working in your group and in your plan for the podcast? What issues do you have with the group and/or your plan for the podcast? How might you remedy those issues? October 13, 2015
