History of the Doctrine T otal Depravity is the first in a series of doctrines. U nconditional Election L imited Atonement I rresistible Grace P erseverance of the Saints (Once in grace, always in grace). 2

The Real Meaning of “Once Saved Always Saved” “The Scriptures teach that a Child of God, saved by the blood, stays saved forever and may never so sin as to be finally lost in hell.” (Affirmed by Dr. Albert Garner [then President of a Baptist school in Lakeland, Florida] on May 9, 1974 in a debate in Gainesville, Florida) 3

All Agree That: 1. A righteous man will not be lost. 2. A faithful man will not be lost. 3. A good man will not be lost. The Question Is: 1. Can a righteous man become unrighteous and still go to heaven? 2. Can a faithful man become unfaithful and still go to heaven? 3. Can a good man become a bad man and still go to heaven? 4

Sam Morris, a Baptist preacher who lived in, and preached for the First Baptist Church in Stamford, Texas, wrote an tract entitled, “Do A Christians Sins Damn His Soul.” Here is a quotation from that article: “We take the position that a Christian's sins do not damn his soul. The way a Christian lives, what he says, his character, his conduct, or his attitude toward other people have nothing whatever to do with the salvation of his soul. And all the sins he may commit from murder to idolatry will not make his soul in any more danger.” 5

Bill Foster, a Baptist preacher in Louisville Kentucky said on this subject, “If I killed my wife and mother and debauched a thousand women I couldn't go to hell – in fact, I couldn’t go to hell if I wanted to. If on judgment day I should find that my loved ones are lost, and should lose all desire to be saved and should beg God to send me to hell with them, he couldn’t do it.” Hoyt Chastain, a Baptist preacher, when pressed in a debate with A. C. Grider, said, “If I left my wife and ran off with a 16 year old girl, God would work it out for my good." 6

Dr. Albert Garner on “Apostasy” ( Taken from Garner~Smith Debate conducted in Gainesville, Florida ) 1. Is the eternal salvation of the child of God, saved by the blood, absolutely unconditional in that he is not required to do anything to go to heaven? Answer: “Yes” 2. Is it possible for a child of God, saved by the blood, to commit all the sins listed in Romans 1:28-32 and Galatians 5:19-21, and die without repenting of them and still go to heaven? Answer: “Yes” 3. If the proposition that you are affirming tonight is true, as a penitent believer in Jesus Christ, am I, J. T. Smith, not eternally safe and secure to go to heaven regardless of my “intellectual dishonesty” and “adding to the word of God” as you, Dr. Garner, have charged me” Answer: “Yes” 7

Passages Used Against A Child of God Going To Hell Psalm 37:23-24 “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and He delighteth in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with His hand.” ~ A Good Man ~ John 6:35 “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst.” ~ A Good Man ~ John 6:37 “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” ~ A Good Man ~ 8

Passages Used Against A Child of God Going To Hell John 10:27-28 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” ~ What God Is Able To Do ~ Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ~ What God Is Able To Do ~ 9

Passages Used Against A Child of God Going To Hell I John 3:9 “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” ~ A Good Man ~ I John 3:9 “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.” (New International Version) Many other passages could be cited that teach the same thing as these passages. However, what those who believe in the impossibility of apostasy need to find is a Scripture that teaches that a child of God who has become wicked and dies in that condition will go to heaven anyway. This they cannot do! 10

Does It Denote Impossibility? 11 Shall Not Believer John 5:24 Condemnation Shall Not Un-Believer John 3:36 See Life Which “Shall Not” Is Stronger? Baptist Believe It Means “Never Shall”

O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? (Ezekiel 18:29) Ezekiel 18:27 “Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.” Ezekiel 18:26 “When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done he shall save his soul alive.”

Second Death 1. Romans Were Free From Sin Romans 6:18 2. Could “yield” themselves to become the servants of “sin unto death” Romans 6:16 3. “Wages of sin is death” Romans 6:23 4. Called the “Second Death” Revelation 21:8 5. Not physical death ~ babies die but do not commit sin. Therefore Children of God may “yield” themselves to be the servants of sin and die spiritually. 15
