3 John the Person Son of Zebedee and Salome Born between A.D. 10 and 15 in Galilee Father was a fisherman, he followed in his footsteps Met and joined Jesus while fishing with his brother James Some people think he was martyred, while others think he died at a young age Tradition says that he was buried in Ephesus

4 LOGISTICS of John’s Gospel Written for Jewish-Christians who were expelled from synagogues after the Roman revolt Written because of John’s mission statement: “But these are written that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (Jn 20:30-31) To strengthen faith and win converts

7 Image of Jesus Jesus is the Lamb of God First entered the Gospel when John the Baptist says: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Jesus is the light and opportunity in our lives as the Savior on earth Jesus is the Divine one (“I am”) Jesus is in the image of: Bread (chpt. 6), Water (chpt. 7), Light (chpt. 8), and Sheppard (chpt. 10)

9 What makes john’s gospel unique? -Synoptic Gospels use a lot of parables, but John hardly does -Synoptic Gospels all mention exorcisms, but John does not -Book of signs: -Synoptic gospels describe miracles as “acts of power” -John describes them as “works” or “signs”

10 What makes john’s gospel unique? -7 Signs: 1.Water into wine (Jn 2:1-12) 5.Walk on water (Jn 6:1-14, 16-24) 6.Cure of the blind man (Jn 9:1-41) 7.Raising of Lazarus (Jn 11:1-44)
