2 He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 3,1847 He was given the middle name “Graham” at age 10 when he asked his dad for one His first invention was at age 12, a de-husking machine for his neighbors mill His neighbors gave a little shop inside of their mill for him to further experiment At age 23 he moved to Canada with his brothers widow where they bought a farm Bell built his own workshop in the carriage house on the farm On the farm he started working on the telephone

3 By 1874 telegraph messages were rapidly expanding He had to find an inexpensive way to transfer the messages After he used all his current knowledge, he hired Thomas A. Watson as his assistant Watson was an expert in electrical designing In 1875 an “accident” happened leading to sound powered telephones On March 10,1876 he succeeded in making his telephone work In 1877, the Bell Company was created. Bell company engineers made numerous improvements making the telephone the most successful product ever He further extended his experiments and came up with photo phone-transmission with sound and light On August 2,1922 he died of diabetes at Beinn Bhreagh, Nova Scotia at age 75

4 His father was Alexander Melville Bell and his mother was Eliza Grace Symonds Bell He had 2 siblings which had passed at a young age due to tuberculosis He married Mabel Hubbard on July 11, 1877 Him and Mabel had four children- two daughters and two sons who died in infancy

5 His early education was at home taught by his father He was then admitted into Royal High School, but then left at age 15 due to poor performance He moved to London to be with his grandfather and enrolled at the Western House Academy To further his studies, joined University of Edinburgh

7 His major contribution to our world today was inventing the first telephone. Although, he did contribute to many other helpful inventions. He will never be forgotten.

8 He was best known for the invention of the first working telephone Metal Detector- this was used to try and find the bullet inside of President James Garfield Audiometer- this was used to detect a hearing problem He made experiments on aeronautics and hydrofoils Alexander invented a machine which helped teach speech to a deaf person He also made an invention that helped find icebergs

9 He was first interested in the science of sound because both his mother and his wife were deaf On March 10, 1876 the first words were spoken over the telephone Him and his investors made the Bell Telephone Company in 1877. There has been many merges and name changes but this company is known today as AT&T On January 15, 1915 he made the first transcontinental call from New York to San Francisco By his wife’s request, he went by the name of Alec He helped form the National Geographic Society Upon his death, every phone in the U.S was silence for a few hours in memory of him
