THE PERIODIC TABLE After Robert Lucas

Something occuring at regular intervals (you can predict what happens / comes next) PERIODIC:

What makes the periodic table periodic? Mendeleev said “Atomic Mass”

What makes the periodic table periodic? But Mendeleev wasn't quite correct Later measurements showed that in a tiny number of cases, like Tellurium and Iodine, the average atomic mass of the element on the left was larger than the mass of the element on the right

What makes the periodic table periodic? Henry Moseley found out the truth in 1913. Then in 1915 the British sent him to Gallipoli where he was killed. wikipedia

The properties of the elements are a periodic function of their atomic numbers PERIODIC LAW

All of the elements in a horizontal row PERIOD

All of the elements in a horizontal row PERIOD This is a period

All of the elements in a vertical column (aka Family) GROUP

All of the elements in a vertical column (aka Family) GROUP This is group I of the table, called the alkali metals

Now let's learn some families and sing our Periodic Table Song GROUP

ALKALI METALS Good Conductors React with water/air Shiny when just cut Called Group I-A

ALKALINE EARTH METALS Harder, denser, than alkalis Conduct electricity Remember Ca, Mg Called Group 2-A

TRANSITION METALS Tend to be hard, colored metals Good conductors Form less soluble salts that are colored in water Columns 3-12 Some books number these 1-B through 8-B

Metals vs Nonmetals Metals on the left –Lots of metals –Conduct electricity, ductile and malleable Nonmetals on the right –Not many – Nonconductive & brittle

HALOGENS Combine with metals to form salts Very reactive elements Very unreactive as salts Come in packages of 2

NOBLE GASES Inert gases (not very reactive) Used in colored signs Their structure will be very important to us

Periodic Melody Sing to the tune of London Bridges; original text by Mr. C.

Periodic Melody Mendeleev was very great Ordered stuff by their weight Properties repeat by eights On his table.

Periodic Melody Mendeleev was very great Ordered stuff by their weight Properties repeat by eights On his table. Eight elements separate elements with similar properties

Periodic Melody Like reactions up and down Up and down, Up and down Like reactions up and down When they’re able. If an element in a column reacts with something else, chances are good that every element in that column will have a similar reaction.

Periodic Melody Alkalis are very soft Don't put them in your loft They react with H 2 O Great conductors. Alkali metals, group 1-A, have “loose” electrons that will move and conduct electricity

Periodic Melody Halogens are colorful Please don't breathe Or you'll croak Diatomic elements They're no fable. Chlorine, fluorine, bromine and iodine react with metals, water, hydrogen—just about anything!

Periodic Melody Iron and nickel, gold and zinc: Waterlogged, all will sink, Silver, copper make good wires, or long cables. There's more to this wonderful ballad, but you'll need to learn some more chemistry first!

Periodic Melody Noble gases don’t react If at all, then not much Noble gases don’t react They are stable. There's more to this wonderful ballad, but you'll need to learn some more chemistry first!

What elements to learn? VERY SOON-- memorize the names and chemical symbols for the critical 40 elements, including bromine, iodine, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic, platinum, silver, gold, mercury, lead and bismuth.
