4 Engaging Scientists in E/PO Introduction to NASA SMD E/PO Panel discussion NASA SMD E/PO Showcase
5
Missions Where does Science Mission Directorate (SMD) EPO fit in NASA? Office of Communications 4 Mission Directorates 10 Field Centers NASA advances its goals through a wide-range of partners Aeronautics Research Human Exploration Science Space Technology Office of Education
6
6 NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Science Education and Public Outreach Forums Organize individual SMD-funded E/PO projects and their teams into a coordinated effort. Assist scientists and educators with becoming involved in SMD E/PO Make SMD E/PO resources and expertise accessible to the science and education communities.
7
NASA Astrophysics Forum The Astrophysics Forum and the Astrophysics E/PO community have focused efforts to support and engage scientists on enhancing awareness of the resources available to them. 7
8
Scientist-Educator Partnerships are the Cornerstone of SMD EPO Outreach Higher Education Informal Education K-12 Formal Education 8
9
Scientist-Educator Partnership The purpose of this partnership is to transform science data into useful, grade-appropriate, educational products and programming while maintaining scientific accuracy and integrity. Scientists bring… Knowledge of Earth & space science/astronomy Knowledge of science research and data Knowledge of STEM career paths Educators bring… Knowledge of science education pedagogy Knowledge of target audience needs (student/teacher) Knowledge of national education standards
10
Scientist involvement in E/PO We will take you through the big questions in taking those first steps: Ways to get involved (Where) Commitment (When) Resources (What) Roles for scientists (How) 10
11
11 Where to get involved
12
When to get involved Special Events (press release, eclipse, solstice, etc.) Ongoing partnerships (Scouts, local library, school district, etc.) School year (faculty, your kids’ school) 12
13
What to get involved with Resources –Curriculum support –Print materials –Exhibits Activities/Events –Speaker –Demonstrate/tour guide/interpret –Observer/telescope facilitator –Builder/maker 13
14
14 How to get involved: Roles for Scientists Different roles to fit your time and interests Guidance = describes involvement at the “steering” level. Examples include: helping to set curriculum standards as part of a school board, science policy/advocate, active membership on a museum board. Partner = describes a long-term/ongoing collaboration with an education team. Expertise = provide scientific content expertise (e.g. in the capacity of a reviewer) to an education team.
