Terminology To simplify an expression is to replace it with its simplest name. The simplest name for 2+5 is 7 An exponent tells how many times the base is used as a factor. A power has two parts, a base and an exponent. 2 3 = 2. 2. 2 exponent base power

Order of Operations P E M D A S arentheses xponents woring from the inside to the outside ultiply &ivide left to right dd &ubtract left to right
4
Simplify: 5. 3 2 - 13 Simplify exponents first 5. 9 – 13 Then multiply 45 – 13 Then subtract 32
5
Simplify: 21 + 49 ÷7 + 1 3 Simplify Exponents first 21 + 49 ÷ 7 + 1 Then divide 21 + 7 + 1 Then add 29
6
Simplify: 6 [13 – 2 (4 + 1)] Simplify innermost parentheses first 6 [13 – 2. 5] Then multiply inside the parentheses 6 [13 – 10] Then subtract inside the parentheses 6. 3 Then multiply 18

Evaluate for a = 5, b = 12, c = 2 a + b + 2c Substitute values for the variables 5 + 12 + 2. 2 Simplify, multiply first 5 + 12 + 4 Then add 21

Evaluate for a = 5, b = 12, c = 2 b 2 – 4a Substitute values for the variables 12 2 – 4. 5 Simplify exponents first 144 – 4. 5 Then multiply 144 – 20 Then subtract 124

C = p + r. p Where C is the total cost of a purchase, p is the price and r is the sales tax rate written as a decimal Find the total cost of a coat priced $34.99 if the sales tax is 6% C = p + r. p Substitute (remember to write the percent as a decimal) C = 34.99 +.06. 34.99 Simplify C = 34.99 + 2.0994 C = 37.0894 Remember this should be a realistic PRICE C = $37.09
