The majority of women go out to work Many men take a more active role in raising children Many men take a more active role in taking care of the home There are many women in high powered jobs There are even make up ranges for men! It is more acceptable for men to care about their appearance

During the two World Wars, attitudes changed because women had to do the work of men who had gone to fight Campaigning by the Suffragettes Slow shift in people’s attitudes

It’s important to remember that not everything is perfect now! Many women still believe they have to work harder than men to achieve in the workplace. Some women believe this is because it’s hard to take a career break to have a child and still be as respected at work.

Women were seen as inferior because of the story of Adam and Eve. Remember in this story it was the woman who was sinful. Some women interpret this as a punishment for trying to gain knowledge. Adam was created first and Eve was then created for Adam None of Jesus’ disciples were women Paul wrote ‘Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband has authority over his wife just as the Christ has authority over the Church’ Ephesians 5:21

The Catholic Church still forbids the ordination of women The Church of England has allowed the ordination of women since 1994

Many Christians today believe that men and women should have equal rights The Bible teaches that men and women are equal ‘God created man in his own image..male and female, he created them’ (Genesis 1:27) The Bible tells us that Jesus treated women very well. They were far quicker to understand the identity and significance of Jesus It was the male disciples who let Jesus down, the women stayed with him until the end It was women who were the first to see Jesus after the resurrection

Ethnic minority – A member of an ethnic group that is smaller than the majority group Multi – ethnic society – Where many different races and cultures live together in one society Racial harmony – Different races living together happily Racism – The belief that some races are superior to others

Background: UK is a multi ethnic society. Lots of people are worried about the number of people coming to live in the UK from overseas BUT the UK has always been a land of many races – Romans, Saxons, Normans

Recent developments: Large scale immigration into the UK from countries in Eastern Europe, eg Poland This is because these countries recently joined the EU. This means their citizens have the right to work in other EU countries.

Facts and figures… Between 2004 and 2006 more than 600,000 Eastern Europeans came to live in UK 198,000 British citizens emigrated abroad

Racism Ethic minorties being persecuted Race riots Immigration can cause a strain on resources It is possible to live in racial harmony Helps people of different races and cultures to understand one another Gives a wider variety of music, food, clothes, culture New people and fresh ideas

How has the government tried to make sure people from different cultures get on?

Community cohesion – A common vision and shared sense of belonging for all groups in society A common vision and sense of belonging Appreciating and valuing the differences between people of different cultures Ensuring equal opportunities for all in the community Making strong and positive relationships with people of different races

Race Relations Act 1976 unlawful to discriminate against anyone because of race, colour, ethnic or national origin in employment, housing education or welfare services Made it illegal to stir up racial hatred, to use in public abusive/insulting words of a racial nature Made it illegal to publish articles that could provoke racism

The Commission for Racial Equality To fight racism and educate the public in the importance of racial equality. Today it deals with complaints about racism eg bullying and racism at work

‘Britishness test’ All new immigrants to the country must take this Speak some English, basic knowledge of British life Questions such as ‘Whose statue is in the middle of Trafalgar Square?’ Who was the first woman PM?

The Community Facilitation Programme Set up with the aim of ensuring that local ethnic communities would be able to: Develop skills needed for work, ensure opportunities for young people, provide health care, make sure that local services provide for the community

1. The Bible says that all races are equal in the eyes of God ‘For God created man in his own image’ Genesis ‘God does not show favouritism, but accepts men from every nation’ Acts ‘There is neither Jew nor Greek..you are all one in Christ’ Galatians

2. The work of Jesus Always treated people equally no matter where they were from – he healed a servant and in the parable of the Good Samaritan taught that people of different races should love one another.

3. The example of Martin Luther King Inspired many Christians Believed God was on the side of the poor and oppressed Dedicated his to working for equal rights for black people in USA Peaceful protests Won Nobel peace prize in 1964 Famous speech ‘I have a dream…’

4. The example of Desmond TuTu The first black Archbishop of South Africa Led campaign of peaceful protests to gain equal status for Black people during the time of white rule Eventually helped to end apartheid Encouraged people to forgive each other

5. The teachings of Christian churches Churches throughout the world condemn racism ‘We affirm that racism is a direct contradiction of the gospel of Jesus’ Methodist Church Every form of social and cultural discrimination must be curbed and readicated as incompatible with God’s design’ Catholic church

1. The ummah One of the most important Muslim teachings is that every Muslim is part of the Ummah. This the world wide community of Muslims united by their faith.

2. The work of Malcolm X An African – American Muslim campaigned for racial equality after his family were attacked by white supremist groups Went to prison for petty crime and there he met members of the radical group ‘the Nation of Islam’ (fighting for a separate state with only black citizens)

Joined the group and took the name ‘X’. In 1964 he became unhappy with the group and started the ‘Muslim Mosque Inc’ He now campaigned for racial equality and brotherhood but thought that violence might be necessary in order to achieve this He was assassinated in 1965 by 3 members of the Nation of Islam

3. The teachings of the Qur’an The Qur’an was written for all races No race can claim to be better than any other In his speech during the Farewell Pilgrimage the Prophet declared that all people descended from Adam and Eve. The only thing that distinguishes one human from another is there good or bad actions

Multi faith society – Where many different religious groups live together in one society Religious freedom – Where people have the right to practise their religion and change their religion

Brief history: Before WW2 most religious people in the UK were Christians In the 60s and 70s there was a large influx of people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong This led to the growth of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh communities Number of Gurdwaras, Mosques and temples increased

Is a multi faith society Accepts religious pluralism (all faiths have an equal right to co – exist) Offers religious freedom to everyone (members of all religions are free to worship)

A greater tolerance and Understanding of other ways of life A varied and rich cultural life A better understanding of different cultures and viewpoints New ways of living and enjoying life – yoga, meditation, dance Religious tension Challenges people to think more closely about their own faith

Interfaith marriage – Marriage where the husband and wife are from different religions Religious pluralism – Accepting all religions as having an equal right to co exist

There are many different religions that can lead to God People should be free to follow whichever one they wish, or to follow none at all Only one religion is completely right. The other religions, although they may lead some people to God are not completely right. These religions should be respected but ther followers should be encouraged to change to the ‘right’ faith Only one religion is right. All the others are wrong. Members of the right faith should convert all others to their faith.

Trying to encourage people to change their beliefs can cause issues Even with good intentions it can still cause conflict Implication is that one set of beliefs is superior to another

Can be positive and help social cohesion BUT can also cause conflict if the families disagree If core values and beliefs are different Many religions frown upon marrying people of other religions What religion will the children belong to? Which religious celebrations will they observe? A mixture of beliefs and faiths can lead to confusion.

Recognise the things that their faiths and cultures have in common Respect their differences Listen to each other’s views Learn to live and work in unity Share common values such as respect, tolerance, charity and non - violence

Work together to try and heal divisions between different faiths Work on basic understanding that God created all human beings have a relationship with Him In Liverpool Church leaders hold an inaugural service Members from all main world faiths take part Serves to foster unity in worship, witness and practical action
