5 Physical Geography Mexico has 5 diverse landforms 1)The Plateau of Mexico –Makes up most of the country –Bordered by 2 mountain ranges (SM Oriental to the east & the SM Occidental to the west) 2) The Valley of Mexico –Located at the south end of the PofM –Includes the country’s capital, Mexico City(Orizaba-highest mtn.at 18,700 ft.)

6 3) The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is a narrow, funnel-like strip of land in southern Mexico which separates the Pacific Ocean & the Gulf of Mexico(150 miles apart) 4) The Yucatan Peninsula, in southeastern Mexico is Mexico’s flattest region 5) Baja California is a strip of land (peninsula) separated from mainland Mexico by the Gulf of California

7 Climate & Vegetation 1) Mexico extends through subtropical & tropical latitudes where savanna, steppe, & desert climates prevail 2) Northern Mexico is arid with desert scrub vegetation & dry grasslands 3) The southeastern coast is hot & humid much of the year with forested plains 4) Climates vary quickly with elevation

8 Natural Resources 1) Mexico is the world’s leading silver producer 2) Petroleum is Mexico’s most valuable natural resource The country’s great oil & natural gas fields lie along the Gulf of Mexico (Most of Mexico’s oil is exported to the United States)
