2 Household Structure When aging parents become ill or disabled they move nearer to their children. Also influenced by their gender and by race and ethnicity Older women are more likely to live alone than older men. In other countries dictate the formation of intergenerational households.

3 Geographic Mobility Movement of older people to the Sun Belt is called Migratory stream Aging in Place is an accommodation between an aging individual and his or her environment over time, with the physical location of the individual being the only constant. (Lawton) Majority of older people want to stay in their own home’s and communities

4 Housing Quality Housing problems of the aged is a problem especially for people who occupy rental properties. Single room occupancy hotels commonly known as SRO’s are at the very bottom of the rental market Homeless aged are as high as 50 percent of those who live on the streets

5 Housing for the elderly Shared housing movement began in 1953 Group homes are one type of shared housing arrangement Match-up program matches home owners with suitable home sharers Home sharing has been promoted as a solution to the long-term care needs of the frail elderly

6 Housing Board and Care Homes provide meals, assistance with daily activities, and a supportive living environment to people who cannot survive on their own. Assisted Living philosophy is the idea of aging in place. Assisted living is another step along the continuum of long-term care.

7 Housing Continuing care retirement communities grew out of the life care concept developed by religious groups for the care of aging lay people and clergy. Independent Living community are geared toward a healthier and younger crowd. Adjustment to the move can be stressful

8 Friendship Networks Activities provide opportunities for residents of CCRC’s to form friendship networks. Friendships are at times determined by marital status. Helps to solve the problem of loneliness in old age, and provide services that many older people need.
