9.3 Graphing Rational Functions What is rational function? What is an asymptote? Which ones can possibly be crossed? A function that is written in fractional form. A vertical or horizontal line that the graph approaches but never reaches. HORIZONTAL (only a few situations)
2
You must: (1) Find HA (Horizontal Asymptotes) (2) Find VA (Vertical Asymptotes) (3) Sketch graph using calculator.
3
To Find Horizontal Asymptotes: Look at the highest exponent in the numerator and denominator and compare: If numerator has highest exponent then: ____________________________________ If denominator has the highest exponent then: ____________________________________ If highest exponents are the same: ____________________________________ No Horizontal Asymptotes y = 0 is your asymptote (x-axis)
4
To Find Vertical Asymptotes: To Find Holes: Set denominator = 0 and solve.
5
(a) To Find When Graphing: (1) HA - __________________ (2) VA - __________________ (3) On Calculator

(b) To Find When Graphing: (1) HA - __________________ (2) VA - __________________ (3) On Calculator
