UNIT 10: RATIONAL FUNCTIONS AND CIRCLE GRAPHS
2
LESSON 1 DAY 1 – HONORS ONLY HONORS - 04/28/16 GRAPHS OF RATIONAL FUNCTIONS OBJECTIVE: SWBAT IDENTIFY THE VERTICAL ASYMPTOTES, X- INTERCEPTS, AND GRAPH OF A RATIONAL FUNCTION
3
Warmup
4
Explore! Work through worksheet 10.1 in groups of 2. Use your graphing calculator to guide and assist you. READ all questions and written-in hints, and answer each question to the best of your ability. Turn in packets at the end of class.
5
Extension Questions: How do you know where the vertical asymptote of the graph is located? What does the equation of a vertical asymptote look like? Why? Are the branches of the graph always in the top right and bottom left? Are they ever in the top left and bottom right? Use your calculator to provide an example of a case in which they are top left and bottom right.
6
Homework – due Monday READ textbook pages 507-510 and take notes on the different “Key Concepts” and Example Problems. Use Problems 1, 2, and 3 to answer page 512 #8-12 (make a table of x-y values), #18-25 ALL.
7
LESSON 1 DAY 2 – HONORS ONLY HONORS - 05/03/16 GRAPHS OF RATIONAL FUNCTIONS OBJECTIVE: SWBAT IDENTIFY THE VERTICAL ASYMPTOTES, X- INTERCEPTS, AND GRAPH OF A RATIONAL FUNCTION
8
HW Review – textbook page 512 #8-12 and #18-25 all

Rational Function
10
Intercepts of a Rational Function
11
Vertical Asymptotes of a Rational Function (also called “Reciprocal Function”)
12
Teamwork! In teams of 3, you will identify: The y-intercept of the function The x-intercept(s) of the function Any vertical asymptotes that the function has Each team member will have a specific role for each round, one for each of the 3 things you are finding. Each characteristic that is correct earns one point for the team At the end of 5 rounds, winning team has no homework for tonight.

Homework – Due Friday Worksheet 10.3 – All 6 functions
15
LESSON 2 DAY 1 – HONORS ONLY HONORS - 05/05/16 GRAPHS OF CIRCLES OBJECTIVE: SWBAT IDENTIFY THE CENTER, RADIUS, POINTS ON THE OUTSIDE, AND EQUATION OF THE GRAPH OF A CIRCLE

20
Homework – Due Friday/Mon(P.1) Complete worksheet 10.3 – All 6 functions Complete Activity Sheet 1 and Activity Sheet 2 from in-class (whatever you do not complete) Study for Quiz on Monday/Wed(P1) on: Graphs of Rational Functions X- and Y-intercepts Vertical Asymptotes No need to memorize how the graphs are shaped, just know the three basics and be able to plot two or three more points. Graphs of Circles Equation Center Radius Identify another point on the circle
21
LESSON 2 DAY 2 – HONORS ONLY HONORS - 05/06/16 GRAPHS OF CIRCLES OBJECTIVE: SWBAT IDENTIFY THE CENTER, RADIUS, POINTS ON THE OUTSIDE, AND EQUATION OF THE GRAPH OF A CIRCLE
22
Entry Card – 4 minutes Turn into the tray
23
Work on Graphing Rational Functions Compare your homework results from 10.3 with your table partners Work on 10.4 with same table partners
24
Review Activity Sheets 1 and 2 and Entry Cards
25
Categorization Tables Match the correct equation to its correct category. Each equation is in its own category. There are four unused categories; create your own equation for these! After you have placed an equation, draw its graph on a separate page, labelling at least 4 points on its circumference.
26
Exit Card: What’d you learn?

Final Exam Study Guide On a separate sheet of paper: Go through your list of topics and find definitions and examples in the textbook for the bold words. In groups of 3, go through each Unit on the study guide and write down a problem that models the topic shown (for each topic) on one sheet of paper per group. You will hand in these problems as a group at the end of class.

Periods 2, 4, 6 – Homework due Tuesday page 531 #15-25 odds page 539 #11-29 odds Factor the expressions, then simplify
36
We turn our attention to Chapter 8-4 in your textbook… READ pages 527-529 and take notes on rational expressions and simplest form, and walk through Problems 1, 2, and 3 on simplifying, multiplying, and dividing rational expressions Try “Got it?” #1a,b,c, #2, and #3a in your notes. Check with Mr. Speer on correct answers.

Bellwork – Final Exam Review #2 Gas is expensive these days! One gas station has decided to charge a $3 user fee regardless of how much gas you pump. Then, in addition, the number of gallons of gas you pump is directly proportional to the price per gallon. Write an equation to represent the cost of gas at that station. Define what each of your variables is. If you pump 12 gallons of gas at $2.10 per gallon, how much are you spending in total there? If you spent $31.50 in total, and the gas price was $2.25 per gallon, did you pump enough gas to fill your 18-gallon tank?
