BELL WORK 1. Define the vocabulary: Ring of Fire, island arc 2. Page 89, Figure 1: Write and answer the question 3. Page 91, Figure 3: Write and answer the question. P. 91, Questions 2-4 What process forms island arcs? What causes hot spot volcanoes to form? What will eventually happen to the big island, Hawaii, that is not over the hot spot?
4
Volcano: a weak spot in the Earth’s surface where magma rises Constructive force that builds up the crust Eruption on Montserrat
5
Summary Write a summary for page one in the summary section. Include: What is a volcano Montserrat video
6
Bell Work 1. Write two questions about the information on page one in the question section. 2. Write the answers to those questions next to them in the content section. 3. Be prepared to ask others the questions for STARE points. (one for the question, one for the answer)
7
Location of Volcanoes Ring of Fire and other plate boundaries: Why are most volcanoes on these boundaries? Because they are geologically active, subduction and diverging; magma is rising to the surface and sinking through convection
8
Volcanoes at Diverging Boundaries Lava flows onto the ocean bottom Mountains are created, but only a few rise above the ocean surface: Iceland and the Azores Islands
9
Hot Spot Volcanoes Form when a plate moves over an crack in the crust through which magma moves to the surface In the ocean: Hawaii On land: Yellowstone Yellowstone’s Supervolcano (or, Just When You Thought We Had It Bad!)
10
Volcanoes and Converging Boundaries Two ocean plates: the more dense goes under the less dense ▪ Magma seeps to the surface through cracks creating volcanoes ▪ Island arcs form along line of trench (sub zone) ▪ Examples: Japan, New Zealand, Philippines
11
Volcanoes and Converging Boundaries Continent and ocean plates: more dense ocean plate subducts under the continent Magma rises up through the fractured crust Volcanic mountain ranges like the Andes are created on the continents Volcanic Island Arcs
12
Summary Write a summary in the summary section that includes: Location Diverging boundaries Hot spots Converging boundaries
