Ruled England for 45 years (1558-1603) Encouraged learning and creativity of the Renaissance. The daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. After the death of her half sister, Mary I, Elizabeth was named queen. Elizabeth reunited the country by fending off foreign threats, and bringing peace and prosperity. Earned the peoples love She made England a major European power in politics and commerce. She spoke many languages and encouraged the development of theatre.

People of the Renaissance were known for their great interests and achievements in literature, in art and in science. The Renaissance began the fourteenth century. People witnessed the birth of the Modern World. Renaissance scholars were interested in all aspects of classical culture. The introduction of the printing press in the fifteenth century helped the spread of learning.

The Renaissance spirit appeared in England as early as the days of Chaucer but was interrupted by the War of the Roses. The Rennaissance took root in England in the time of King Henry VIII. His daughter, Elizabeth I, came to the throne in 1558. The next hundred years saw a period of remarkable literary achievement in England.

Nonfiction writers usually wrote in prose. Fiction writers wrote poetry. Elizabethan poets often wrote sonnets, fourteen line poems with a special and fixed form. Edmund Spenser, John Milton, and William Shakespeare wrote in sonnets. Shakespeare is most famous as a dramatist. He wrote comedies, tragedies, and historical plays. He is widely recognized all over the world.

James I died in 1625, and his son, Charles I, became king. People did not like Charles I and wanted him removed. In 1649 his opponents beheaded him. For a decade, England was without a king. The ruling party governed by religious authority. The leaders suppressed expression and individual thoughts and ideas that clashed with beliefs. The English Renaissance came to an end.

The theme of a poem is its main idea or central message. When reading two poems, by the same author, you learn more by comparing and contrasting their themes. 1. Identify the theme. 2. Look at similarities and differences of the two poems.
