Starter: Write your own definition for the following key terms Infectious Disease Microorganism Pathogen Bacteria Virus Toxin Symptoms

L2: Pathogens and Disease Learning Objectives: Recall that bacteria and viruses are pathogens. Compare the structures of bacteria and viruses. Explain how pathogens can be infectious and spread disease. Compare how bacteria and viruses cause disease.

Infectious – can be passed from one person to another Disease – an illness caused by infection or failure of health Microorganism – a living thing that is too small to be visible to the human eye Pathogen – a microorganism which causes disease Bacteria – a type of microorganism Virus – an extremely small microorganism, debatable whether they are alive Toxin – a poisonous substance that causes disease Symptoms – the physical changes in the body caused by a disease

Bacteria vs Viruses Read the data sheets and make notes about the key differences between bacteria and viruses and how they cause disease. Make sure to include the following: Compare the structures. Give examples of the types of microbes and the diseases they cause. Compare the way that they cause disease.

How does disease spread?

Practical: Should you wash your hands? We are going see how much bacteria is on our hands! Label your agar plate with “before” and “after” (and your initials). Gently place your thumb print onto the “before section”. Wash your hands. Gently place your thumb print onto the “before section”. Leave bacteria to grow and check back next week.

Video: Influenza Watch the video and answer the following questions: What microorganism causes the flu? How does it spread? What are some of the body’s defences against the microbe? How does the microbe get past the defences? What does the microbe do once in the body? What is the body’s response to the microbe? Extension: How does this lead to the symptoms experienced?
