4 The NHS belongs to the people It is there to improve our health and well-being, supporting us to keep mentally and physically well, to get better when we are ill and, when we cannot fully recover, to stay as well as we can to the end of our lives. It works at the limits of science – bringing the highest levels of human knowledge and skill to save lives and improve health. It touches our lives at times of basic human need, when care and compassion are what matter most.

8 My Induction into the NHS Preparation for the scheme Not a lot! Read through NHS constitution (again) and trust specific paper work The orientation period Opportunity to get to know the NHS from the inside Attend meetings/shadowing staff/ambulance shift and more… Make the most of it to see how the depts work differently and together

9 My Typical Day Each role is different 37.5 hours per week On-site or off-site Ward or office based IT project manager (2 main projects) Planning and leading on two projects for new IT tools in the Trust Meeting with clinicians, stakeholders and suppliers Testing the software Rolling out new tools and supporting staff as they learn to use it Meeting with Programme Board Information Analyst Working with SQL Researching and writing reports based on Trust performance, of FOI requests Managing data quality before it is sent to national organisations for intelligence

10 Challenges On The Scheme Workload – straight into management position Self-confidence – little relevant experience Job vs Education Making the most of the scheme – being proactive with opportunities and areas of interest Act with confidence Take advantage of education days and travel Trainee/Managerial support Work/life balance

11 I wish someone had told me…. I wish I knew: Be proactive from the start – if you don’t ask, you won’t get! Pearls of wisdom Take advantage of the opportunities to learn – Prince2/SQL etc. Words of advice: Talk to other trainees before the scheme starts (also before you apply)
