4 WHAT ARE SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES? Feeling hot Runny nose Cough Symptoms Cause Problem Having a cold Any problem has both symptoms and causes… What you see or experience when there is a problem. Catching a cold virus from a friend What is making the problem happen.

5 WHY IS WATER IMPORTANT? Can you make a list of things we need water for? For example: Drinking Cooking Washing Removing waste (protecting you from disease) Growing food.

6 THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER How much water do you need per day? To drink? 2-4 litres For everything else? It depends where you live... In the UK most people use about 150 litres per day each. In other countries people use less than 20 litres each. To grow your food? 2000-5000 litres is used to produce food for one person in the UK. Source: United Nations Human Development Report 2006

7 WATER VULNERABILITY If you are water-vulnerable it means you are… At risk or In danger Because of something to do with water. Untreated water collected from a reservoir. © Jane Beesley

8 SymptomCause Problem: water vulnerability Like any problem, water vulnerability has symptoms and causes… What is making water vulnerability happen. Being at risk because of a lack of clean water. What you see or experience when water vulnerable. WATER VULNERABILITY

9 SYMPTOMS OF WATER VULNERABILITY Not having enough water that is clean for drinking or cooking. Not having toilets or sanitation (risking disease). Low levels of hygiene (risking disease). Having to travel a long way to find water. Not having enough water to grow crops. Can you think of any more..?

10 CAUSES OF WATER VULNERABILITY You are going to watch five film clips which will help you to understand more about this. They are about some of the causes of water vulnerability: Conflict Drought Water infrastructure (meaning pipes, wells and irrigation) Floods

11 WORKSHEET Put a tick where the symptoms and causes are linked. You could complete a worksheet to help you relate the symptoms and causes.
