Dave Newbold, University of Bristol14/8/2001 Testbed 1 What is it? First deployment of DataGrid middleware tools The place where we find out if it all works + scales! A real production / test / development facility How big is it? Medium-scale - “About 40 sites” Maybe 6+ sites in the UK? (At varying scales) Time to get (even more) serious about: Security Reliability Support Application deployment

Dave Newbold, University of Bristol14/8/2001 Testbed 1 - Schedule The schedule (see A. McNab’s talk) Preparation process is running now Identify people, sites, issues, resources, etc… Intensive integration process starts 1/10/01, lasts 2-3 weeks A small subset of sites will deploy tools soon after Other sites will turn on incrementally after that Then we try to break it… What do we need to do now? Define contribution to integration process (A. McNab et al) Define UK infrastructure requirements (A. Martin, A. Sansum et al) Identify participating sites in the UK Identify first applications in the UK Get all interested parties “in the loop” - and hooked into TB0

Dave Newbold, University of Bristol14/8/2001 Participation Which UK sites should participate? Suggested minimum: RAL Sites which will offer services on the future HEP Grid (“Tier-2”) Sites which are already active in distributed computing for HEP. LHC production sites + current experiment computer centres What resources can a site provide? A cluster of ‘processing elements’ (boxes) Some local storage A ‘storage element’ (MSS)? A batch system A gatekeeper machine A gridmistress / gridmaster team To provide both sysadmin and support services

Dave Newbold, University of Bristol14/8/2001 More details For more detailed information: http://marianne.in2p3.fr/datagrid/testbed1/testbed1.html Security: User certification handled through the UK CA You will need to name a security contact for verification of applications All users must sign CERN-esque ‘Acceptable Use Policy’… …is it compatible with your site’s security policy? Tell us! Support: Primary contact will be the local adminstrator, then the national WP6 support reps, then the middleware / globus developers. Platforms: Intel / Linux at first – Solaris next – others after by arrangement

Dave Newbold, University of Bristol14/8/2001 What to do next… Decide: Whether to participate What resources (personnel, kit) you will allocate Confirm to me (et al) your site’s intention to participate I will put you in touch with appropriate people (mostly in this room)… …who will then discuss (lots) more technical issues. Make sure you are in TB0; subscribe to the mailing lists ukhepgrid; ukhepglobus; dg-eur-site-contact; globus lists Nominate a contact person grid.sysadmin@hep.yourinst.ac.uk Start trying some things out!
