3. Largely an initiative of Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the Constitution Act of 1982 brought the country's constitution to Canada from Great Britain for the first time. The most significant parts of the Constitution Act were the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which prohibited discrimination against individuals based on their ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexuality, and the legal protection of the rights of minorities to their language and education in that language.
