2 Frontier Definition: A distant area where few people live. Example of frontier in a sentence. Americans settled the frontier during the mid -nineteenth century.

3 Transcontinental Railroad Definition: A railroad built across the American continent, connecting the eastern and western coast of the United States. Example of transcontinental railroad in a sentence. The transcontinental railroad allowed Americans to travel from the east coast to the west coast quickly and comfortably.

4 Settler Definition: A person who moves to a place where few people live. Example of settler in a sentence. The American government wanted settlers to move to the West during the mid - nineteenth century.

5 The Great Plains Definition: An area between the Mississippi River and Rocky Mountains. The land in the great plains consisted of flat and fertile grasslands. Example of The Great Plains in a sentence. American settlers moved to the Great Plains during the mid-nineteenth century to work as farmers, miners, and cattle herders.

6 Prairie Definition: A large area of level or slightly rolling land. Example of prairie in a sentence. The land in the Great Plains was considered to be prairie land.

7 The Homestead Act (1862) Definition: The Homestead Act was passed by Congress in 1862. The Homestead Act granted 160 acres of land to any American farmer. In return, the American farmers had to.  Pay the American government $10.  Live on the land for five years.  Build a home within six months of receiving the land.  Grow crops.

8 Homesteader Definition: A person who received land under the Homestead Act (1862). Example of homesteader in a sentence. A person who went out West to farm in the mid- nineteenth century was called a homesteader.

9 Sod House Definition: A house built out of dirt and grass on the Great Plains. Example of sod house in a sentence. Homesteaders built sod houses on the Great Plains. They built sod houses because there was not enough wood on the Great Plains to build wood houses.

10 Native Americans Definition: Any member of the peoples living in North or South America before the Europeans arrived. Example of Native Americans in a sentence. Native Americans lived on the Great Plains before American settlers arrived.

11 Traditions Definition: The handing down of information, beliefs, and customs from one generation to another. Example of traditions in a sentence. The arrival of Americans in the Great Plains threatened many Native American traditions.

12 Nomadic Definition: A group of people who travel from place to place in search of food. Example of nomadic in a sentence. The Native Americans who lived on the Great Plains were nomadic.

13 Reservation Definition: A public land set aside by the government for the use of a particular group of people. Example of reservation in a sentence. The United States government forced Native Americans to live on reservations during the nineteenth century.

14 Ghost Dance Definition: A group dance carried out by Native American tribes during the 19 th century to promote the return of the dead and the restoration of traditional ways of life. Example of ghost dance in a sentence. The United States Army believed the ghost dance was a war dance.

15 Reformer Definition: A person who works for a cause that improves the way something is done in a society. Example of reformer in a sentence. Helen Hunt Jackson was a reformer who fought for Native American rights.

16 American Indian Boarding School Definition: Were schools created to educate Native American children in the ways of Euro-American culture. Native American children were given Christian names, forced to speak English, and learn traditional American jobs and skills.

17 The Dawes Act (1887) Definition: A law passed by Congress to “civilize” Native Americans by forcing them to adapt to Euro-American culture.  American children were to be educated in the ways of Euro-American culture.  Native Americans were given land to become farmers.  Native Americans were given American citizenship in return for renouncing their tribal loyalties.

18 Cowhand Definition: A person who was hired to care for cattle, keep them from getting lost or stolen, and transport them to railroad stations during cattle drives. Example of cowhand in a sentence. Cowhands took cattle on the cattle drive once a year.

19 Cattle Drive Definition: The process in which cowhands would transport cattle from the Great Plains in Texas to railroad stations. The cattle would be loaded on railroad cars and transported to cities in the east.

20 Prospector A person who searches for gold or silver or other valuable minerals. Example of prospector in a sentence. Men who travelled west during the mid- nineteenth century in search of gold were called prospectors.

21 Boom Town Definition: A camp that grows into a town almost overnight. Example of boom town in a sentence. A boom town was created once prospectors found gold or silver in the West.

22 The Grange Definition: An organization formed by farmers in 1867. The Grange was a social, economic, and political organization created to help farmers living on the Great Plains. Example of The Grange in a sentence. The Grange fought for fair transportation rates from railroad companies.
