But I don’t know how to be an advocate
16
Unsavory learning points: How laws change: Money ($36K + 7K+ 10K) Votes (Fundraisers, etc) Money and Votes Champion/Cause Long term relationships – Lunches – Donations – Perception of Shared Goals – Resources Legislative Rules of the Game Politicians change their minds Reason doesn’t prevail Nobody promised us life would be fair Status quo is HARD to shake Handshakes matter more than titles and statistics
17
How to be an advocate 101: Practice – Elevator speeches – Build relationships – BE a resource – Ask for specific help – Persist – Develop cultural competence
18
Build Relationship: I know that the suicide prevention act was so important to you. I’m so glad that bill finally passed. BE a resource: I’m glad that APA site I sent you helped. Elevator Speech: As you know, West Virginia needs more psychologists trained at national standards to take care of our elderly, our veterans, and our citizens who wish to be treated in primary care and hospital settings. A change in the licensure law would help the public, and it would aid in the retention of doctoral level psychologists who are reimbursed by federal dollars for the more than 30% of West Virginians who are covered by Tricare and Medicare. ASK: Can I count on your support for the psychology licensure law revision? Connect: Great! And I’ll see you at the Farmers Market opening day.

Here's another great video to check out from Dr. Donald McAleer, PsyD, ABPP, from the American Psychological Association, on how to lobby legislators! http://www.northshorepractices.com/healthLi brary.php?item=24 Enjoy!
