By 1809 when Thomas Jefferson left presidential office foreign relations with England were very bad – (Review: D&R’s support of France, Louisiana Purchase, Embargo Act of 1807) England made things worse by supporting the Native American in the Ohio River Valley After the Battle of Fallen Timbers and the death of Little Turtle all the remaining Indian Tribes of the North-West united under the leadership of a Shawnee Chief named Tecumseh and his brother a Medicine Man (Native American doctor/Spiritual leader) called Prophet Tecumseh led the tribes in a war to retake the Ohio River Valley Whose uniform is Tecumseh wearing?

At the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) the Federal Army led by William Henry Harrison defeated the combined tribes of Tecumseh After the battle Tecumseh and his warriors fled to Canada where the English made them welcome Battle of Tippecanoe Where did the Battle happen?

In Canada the Native Americans were able to get supplies from the British to continue fighting the United States This made many Americans very angry at England According to this cartoon, why were Americans so Angry about England letting Native Americans live in Canada?

Led by Henry Clay of Kentucky a new political power grew in the west, they called themselves the War Hawks The War Hawks were Democratic- Republicans, but they added the goal of pushing England off the whole continent with a war to the party platform The War Hawks had three reasons for the United States to go to war with England a.Impressments of US sailors b.Violation of US ships at sea c.England’s support of Native American resistance in the United States While not given as a reason for war, the War Hawks wanted to add Canada to the United States

What are the Key Points of the War of 1812? The War Hawks got the new D&R president (James Madison –US’s 4 th ) and the D&R controlled congress to declare war on England The war began very well for the US because England was fighting Napoleon (France) and didn’t have the time, money, or soldiers to deal with the US This changed when England defeated France in 1814 and could turn its full military might against the US England quickly began to win the war and their army marched on Washington D.C. and burned it to the ground England then slowed down when their plan to march an army from Canada into New England failed because of a US naval victory on Lake Champlain

Both the US and England realized the war was going no where and quit They signed the “Treaty of Ghent” ending the war There were no changes in territory – The war changed nothing Why is it named the Treaty of Ghent?

Oliver Perry: Became a naval hero when he won a major victory for the US by defeating the British Navy on the Great Lakes Francis Scott Key: A prisoner of the English, he wrote the “Star Spangled Banner” while watching the British attack Fort McHenry in Baltimore MD

William Henry Harrison: Already a hero from the Battle of Tippecanoe, gained more fame as the general leading the Federal Army against the English during the war of 1812 - He used this fame to become the US’s 9 th president Andrew Jackson: led an army of militia, Native Americans, African Americans, and pirates and defeated a large English army at the Battle of New Orleans This made Jackson an important man in Southern politics and he became the US’s 7 th president Sadly the battle took place two weeks after the peace treaty was signed

The most important thing about the War of 1812 was the US realized that it was a world power and began acting like it In 1823 the US’s 5 th president James Monroe (D&R) declared a strong new US foreign policy to the world Part of this foreign policy was called the Monroe Doctrine 1823 It said Europe couldn’t create any new colonies in the Americas without going to war with the US – It claimed the US was the power in the Western hemisphere The Monroe Doctrine is still the foundation of US Foreign Policy - Making the US the leading country in the Western Hemisphere and world leader

Another important thing that President Monroe accomplished was the “Transcontinental Treaty” It allowed the US to give Spain 5 million dollar for Florida and set the boarder between the US and New Spain
