Community Leagues In Wyndham

Observations Proliferation of “two team” cricket clubs with no desire to work together to grow a community club. Different ideas around the level of governance/administration required for a community sporting club. Minimal capacity to develop participation beyond Senior Men’s teams. Pressure on facility provision.

Observations The “traditional product” isn’t for everyone. Apprehension towards the Club environment. Residents have desire to play, but on different terms. COMMITMENT SCHEDULING COST TRAVEL Informal games, competitions and activities.

Solution PRODUCT Relieve pressure on ground allocations and club sustainability Tailor the product to address the ways that people want to play BUT it can’t be completely isolated to the sport (peak body) or the local club or association network

Process SPORTS DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK Community Meeting – Identify & Engage Interested Community Members. Council staff attend meetings. Establish good governance foundation from outset. Ensure viability of initial offerings. Hands on assistance. Transition extent of support once season has started and activity becomes more operational.

Stakeholder ‘Wants’ SOCIAL GROUPS Want to play cricket with and against their friends. Want secure access to a ground (i.e. a booking). Want to access at a low cost. Don’t want to have to do too much administration. CLUBS & ASSOCIATIONS Want to grow their membership. Want talented players to represent club. COUNCIL Want to grow cricket participation but not number of clubs. Want to avoid ‘conflict’ between cricket groups. Want accountability for use of cricket facilities (incl.insurance).

ASSOCIATION (WDCA/WSUCCA) SOCIAL CRICKET CLUB Associations work with Social Cricket Groups to facilitate a competition on Sunday mornings. Consistent with Cricket Victoria’s “Adopt a Grade” model. As a general rule, Grand Finals must be played on or before the March long weekend. However, a winter competition may be possible. The Social Cricket Groups incorporated as a Cricket Club. All teams and players registered with that Club, but played in the same competition (the competition ‘adopted’ by the Association). The Cricket Club collect the fees from each team. Cricket Victoria’s Adopt a ‘Grade’ Model

Competition Structure & Rules 2 Seasons & 2 Competitions October to December (9 weeks) January to March (9 weeks) Allows for teams to come in and out of competition Blank Canvas! Format and Rules were determined with Social Teams. Use Association structures/rules as a guide.

Delivery of Competition Committee Made up of team representatives Required to manage competition, finances, membership Association Assistance WDCA & WSUCCA were linked with Social Cricket Club to mentor/guide. Main Function: Set up competition on MyCricket. On Game Day Fixture is on MyCricket (games and grounds). Teams provide own equipment. Teams provide own umpires. Captains upload scores, or text to a central administrator. Results and Ladder updated on MyCricket.

Facility Requirements Stripped Back Requirements Ground with synthetic hard wicket. Toilet access. No changerooms, social rooms or cricket nets. More affordable seasonal hire fee. Facility Provision 13 grounds across Wyndham with public toilet access. Isolate Umpires Room to provide toilet access. When desperate, open up mini pavilions. Future Provision MiloIn2Cricket & T20 Blast (Sunday Mornings) Involvement from other Councils (Brimbank, Maribyrnong etc)

Opportunities For Engagement Include; Kids in MiloIn2Cricket Filling shortages in Saturday teams Combined training nights Running functions in club rooms etc. Potential transition of participants/teams to Club in 2015/16 (breadth of membership etc.). Local Cricket Clubs were linked with Social Cricket Team Captains and vice versa. Local Cricket Club Engagement

Cultural Diversity Cup One day soccer tournament held annually in March. Popular amongst cultural groups and agencies. In 2015, 11 teams. Get everyone excited about playing soccer! BUT the barriers (the same barriers as cricket) prevent meaningful transition to community competition. Apply the learnings of Cricket to Soccer.

Wyndham Community Football Sports Development Framework Diverse Committee – strong engagement from leaders from the Cultural Diversity Cup Incorporated Insurance - FFV Play Football Fee ($30 Seniors) Training is an “opt in” – it is OK for teams to just play. 8 teams & ~150 registrations in Year 1. Individual registration of $50 for 12 week season. (Would change if we had our time again).
